Louisiana Charter School Question & Discussion

There is a charter school in my area. Today I was talking about it with some people who are involved in the school system and I learned that this particular charter school is a F graded school (or whatever it is) and the school gets $3 Million a year from the parish school board budget, which comes out to be almost $10k a student whereas the public schools get about $4k a student.
Are the charter schools in New Orleans different from some of these other charter schools in other parishes that just popped up (this particular school, I think, is in its 2nd year). There are commercials for this charter school, which is what sparked the conversation, but I am just curious how this works. Are they privately owned?

Charter schools are making some people a lot of money, especially in New Orleans. "Non-profit", of course but they're engaging in shady contracts, stealing property from the state, and paying some nice 6-figure salaries to people in politically connected families.

Someone mentioned that the companies involved were big donors to Jindal's campaign. I wasn't sure if that was an accurate statement, I can look it up, but didn't..

So it's people in the private sector getting rich unjustly, whereas pre-katrina under traditional public schools it was people in the public sector getting rich unjustly.

Nothing better than money that isn't taxed.

mother fricking THIS
They aren't all bad, but when you see a school making massive gains in a short period of time, you probably need to investigate that.

In St.Louis, the Charters are another option for inner city kids. Billed as better education.
Same in New Orleans?

They are more predominant now than traditional charters. A post-katrina occurrence. Their effectiveness is in question though, although on paper they are certainly supposed to be a step up from the old.

What the politicians that advocated for them promised.
Some are used to pass kids through. Some have very competitive sports teams. I've heard one in my area has kids that were expelled from public school participating in sports.
I don't think their accountability level is the same as the public schools.

The reason I was asking in terms of comparing to charter schools in New Orleans, it seems like the charter schools in New Orleans offer sports. There might be others around the state that does as well, but it seems like there are several charter schools in New Orleans that have successful athletic programs.

New Living Word here in Ruston is always in the Class C Basketball playoffs.
They lost the Class C State Championship game this year.

Schools that are in Class B & C, that's schools that do not have certain athletic programs right? It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the number of students?

Public education in Louisiana is a abject failure based on every single metric. On top of that, school systems have large budgets, which means excessive amounts of system-wide waste, at best, and fraud at worst.
Charters can't possibly be worse than regular schools/school systems, and at least the financial failure of one charter doesn't impact other charters.
Anyone who lives in Louisiana and thinks traditional schools are the "best" or "proper" choice are fricking retards. My .02.

Charter schools are a scam. I have worked closely with them. What they do is they kick out all the bad kids and kids that score low on a pre test designed to mimic the actual state test. They keep the kids just long enough to get the money and get rid of them before they reflect poorly on their school grade. Also, just last year the largest charter system in New Orleans was just busted by giving the state test, realizing the students were not going to score well on it, so they then taught the stuff on it for 2-3 weeks and regave the test.

It depends what the demographics are of each respective school district.

At least with charter schools in NOLA the families have a choice. If the school is not providing a quality education, they can move to another or not go there in the first place. The ones who are screwed in the charter system are the kids with parents who are too lazy or stupid to research the options, and the special needs kids that no one wants.
