Has anyone in the Lounge ever been?
Outside of walking through the park, are there any activities you would recommend while visiting?
Some friends and I were looking at roadtripping from Denver this summer and were hoping to camp there for about a week.

Did it about 10 years ago and I've wanted to go back ever since, but life happened .
Other than the back country hikes in the park, we did most of our activities on the road trip there and back.

I've been a couple of times. Personally for backpacking I prefer Jackson Hole, I just did the typical tourist thing in Yellowstone looking at geysers, Yellowstone Falls and such. I can't imagine there isn't more one could do though, it's a fairly large park.

Most visitors, being the lazy Americans they are, drive the park loop and complain about the crowds. The good news in that for you is that by getting a mile from the road you get away from 90% of the people. And that's literally, not figuratively. Lots of

Just went
It's awesome
You drive around the park and do short hikes from various stopping points.
A must do is a half day private guided fishing trip on Yellowstone lake

Been three times. Headed there again in Sept. Hike some of the off trails (bear spray recommended) and see the Hayden Valley.

Worked there one summer as a college kid. Strongly suggest going in early summer or late summer. Crowds turn the main roads into parking lots during peak season. Call & ask for the best dates to beat the crowds. Stop and ask any park employee, preferably the student aged ones, where they go on their off days, as they know where the best places are & where not to go with regards to crowds. For instance, to watch Old Faithful, avoid the huge crowds sitting on benches like school kids & ask for directions to the trail up the nearest mountain. Hike up a relatively easy trail & at a rest stop, enjoy the gorgeous scenery in almost complete privacy, absent a few student workers probably. Bring your own booze. The stores there are pricy but admittedly, convenient. Get up early each morning to again beat any crowds. Do not leave trash out by your tent: bears like easy food. Fact.
