Tips for Living (briefly) in the Middle East?

This summer I'll be spending 10 weeks in Jordan, mainly Amman. I'll be traveling to the Dead Sea, Petra, and a variety of other historical sites during my visit there.
I know some of you O&G baws have been to the Middle East for long periods of time and I was curious to see your description of life in an Arab country in general. I'm also
interested in hearing from anyone who has had experience living in Amman in particular.
Thanks

Lived in Bahrain for a year, luckily they sell booze there. It's hot, a dry heat, but still frikking hot. No copy write laws so get you a $10 Rolex. Barter for just about everything.

I didn't live in Amman, but I stayed there for a few days. Compared to the rest of the Middle East, Amman (all of Jordan, really) is very easy for Westerners to adapt to.
A piece of advice I'd give is that even when it's very hot, it's still best to wear pants. Wearing shorts gets you some unwelcome looks from the natives, but they won't really say anything unless you're walking in front of a mosque. For some reason, they have a strange dislike of bare legs.
Amman has easy access internet and clean water. There are also plenty of Westerners so you won't feel totally out of place. Everyone I met was nice. Hope this helps.

Do they have a porn industry in the middle east?

I'll be doing a study abroad with Texas A&M's Arabic Language Program. So unfortunately for the most part I won't have the freedom to go do anything I want at anytime, although there will be some student only (no faculty help in planning or traveling) field trips to historical sights to help us practice our Arabic.

Nothing. It's just nice to be respectful and accommodating when possible.

Jordan is awesome. It's the most secular country in the middle east (not that that's saying much). Lots of history, beautiful landscape, and good looking women that aren't covered up. Since you're staying there for 10 weeks, get someone you trust to take you across the border to Beirut. It's a very underrated city and the folks there know how to party.
