Was Glenn Dorsey just a once in a lifetime type of player Or....

Has anyone ever noticed how our Defensive Tackle talent has slowly slipped into complete mediocrity since Dorsey?
I really miss those days. Glenn Dorsey was an absolute freak. He was one of the MOST disruptive defensive tackles in SEC history. He was an absolute gamer. A game changer on the defensive line. A stat-sheet-stuffer. Since Dorsey there hasn't been much of a force in the middle of our line. It just have progressively gotten worse over the years.

Plus Rickey Jean-Francois is still in the league, and Ego Ferguson was a 2nd rounder.

2007 Bronko Nagurski Award
2007 Consensus All-America
2007 John Outland Trophy
2007 Ronnie Lott Trophy
2007 SEC Defensive Player of the Year
2007 Vince Lombardi Award
I mean yeah... those type of defensive tackles aren't on your team that often.

Ya, LSU pumps out a lot of NFL players, I know that. Not saying that we haven't had anyone good since Dorsey. I'm just saying NO ONE has come remotely close to being a disruptive force on the DLINE like Glenn was. No one has played like that at LSU since he left.

Yeah, about those mediocre first round draft picks. Our defensive line has sucked since Dorsey. I know this is the rant, but please stop being a moron.

Yes. Yes, you are.

Sacks are definitely the tell all for a defensive tackle....
Dorsey was the best defensive tackle we have had in a long time...heck maybe ever, but using sacks as an indicator for a defensive tackle makes me think you know nothing about football.

And I'm NOT talking about the NFL MORON, I'm talking about LSU. My OP is talking about what Dorsey did WHILE playing at LSU. Brockers and Logan were great talents no doubt that's why they went to tha LEAGUE but WHILE IN COLLEGE they didn't produce like Dorsey did. Not even combined! That's my point.

Not every DT that comes to LSU is expected to win the Nagurski Award, Lombardi Award, Outland Trophy, Lott Award, be a Bednarik Finalist, consensus All-American, first team All-American (twice), first-team All-SEC (twice), and SEC Defensive Player of the Year. We've had some good ones since 2007, but Dorsey was a VERY special player.

Drake Nevis was pretty damn good his senior year as well.
And Brockers was a monster while only a RS sophomore, not everything a DT does shows up in stats.

I know there is more to playing defensive tackle than sack's and tackles for loss. Taking on double teams, maintaining leverage, and gap control to stuff a hole is key. Spilling the play outside for the linebacker or plugging a hole in hopes that the play is a loss even if you don't make the tackle. That's all fine and dandy. But Dorsey was all over the field. He did all that and STILL was a freak individually. He wreaked havoc. We just haven't had a force like that since he left. That's all im saying.

This may not be a fair comparison. Brockers only played 2 seasons and only started one. I know Bennie left early as well but I think he started in both '11 and '12.

Davon Godchaux is criminally underrated. I honestly think he is our best interior lineman since Glenn Dorsey. (Yeah, I know that's saying a LOT.) Hopefully the new defense doesn't put him out of position.
But to answer your question. Yes, Glenn Dorsey at LSU was a generational talent, and we will likely never have a more decorated defensive lineman.
ETA: Piggybacking off of these stats.
Godchaux had 6 sacks last year, almost as many as Logan/Brockers had in their career.

Dorsey was arguably the best defensive lineman to ever play at LSU (he definitely was the most decorated). It would be like looking at every running back we get from here on out and going "Well he's no Leonard Fournette."

Actually Brockers, Logan, Nevis, Ego Ferguson and others were very good during their time at LSU.
I will grant you that none were as decorated as Dorsey but all were a force and got in the way of opposing foes.
That's a fair enough statement.

OP has a point. The DT position has declined since Dorsey.

It's not at all.
Dorsey started 31 games at LSU and played in 52. Brockers started in 15 games and played in 27. Logan started 25 games and played in 30. Dorsey started more games than Brockers / Logan appeared in. Dorsey played in 22 more games than Logan and 25 more games than Brockers. When someone plays in that many more games than another, they tend to have more production and stats... Obviously.
Dorsey stats as a full time starter: 133 tackles, 21 TFL, 10 sacks (2 seasons). So averages out to 66.5tackles, 11 TFL, 5 sacks per year.
Logan stats as a full time starter: 102 tackles, 12 TFL, 5 sacks (2 seasons). Averages out to 51tackles, 6 TFL, 2.5sacks per year.
Brockers stats as a full time starter: 54 tackles, 10 TFL, 2 sacks (1 season).
Dorsey is the best DT we have ever had at LSU. Dude was awesome. But strictly going off of career stats is a stupid way to judge / compare players, especially when you are comparing their stats to a player that played in 22 and 25 more games than the other guys. Look at the per year averages as a full time starter... Dorsey still out produces the other 2, but it's a fairer way and a lot closer than just going off their career stats, considering Dorsey was on the field for wayyy more games than the other 2.
I'm not saying these guys were as good as Dorsey or even on the same level as him. Because they aren't. Dorsey is the best DT we've ever had and arguably the best defensive player we have ever had. But to say that they were mediocre at LSU is just wrong. They were very good at LSU and very productive starters. It's not like there's this massive difference in per year averages as starters between them and Dorsey.
