What retailers? When?

I bought gift cards at Christmas this year from the typical places and never had anyone tell me I couldn't pay with credit.

Best Buy, Walmart, Home Depot, Amazon, Target and a couple of clothing stores in the mall that my wife bought for friends all worked. That kids clothing place Justice worked when we gave my little sister in law a gift card there and my wife took her shopping.

Do tell...

rite aid did this with vanilla cards as well. For months you were able to buy 500$ vanilla cards with your CC for a percentage cash back and deposit those in to your bank account to pay off the CC. Or use the money to pay off your mortgage. CC companies caught on to this and are cracking down on ways to cheat the system.
That is fricking b.s. you can't tell me how and what I can spend my money on. F that

buy gas gift cards at the grocery store because I get 6% cash back with my credit card at grocery stores.

Assuming Amex, the 6% is capped at 6000 in purchases annually, so this benefit won't get you that far assuming you buy a fair amount of groceries

Before there was a cap, it was very lucrative. You could essentially get 6% back on a ton of categories.

This is one of the many reasons companies are starting to change their policy, and I'm willing to bet this is explicitly forbidden in the terms of the 6% cash back offer with your CC company.

No one is going to knock you for trying to game the system, but you shouldn't be surprised when they close the loophole you've found.

Most fraudulent credit card transactions involve gift card purchases

We stopped offering Christmas gift cards at the bank for this exact reason. It was great way to launder money.

I don't buy gift cards often but I had this happen the last time I tried. It was at Fred Meyer FWIW.

That's just it, you aren't making the purchase with your money, you are making it with a CC, which is someone else's money you are borrowing.

Yeah, the cap doesn't affect me. I still get 3% back at gas stations so it isn't like I'm totally out of luck. It is just that 6% is better than 3%.

You can get 5% cash back at gas stations using penfed's gas card which happens to be free

It's also a visa so it's taken at the gas stations that Amex isn't

I use the Amex for groceries only and the penfed for gas

The CC paid the store, it is not your money that paid the store. You paid the CC company after the fact. The store in no way got money directly from you and had to pay a service charge to allow you to not pay them directly.

This statement proves that you don't understand how a CC works. The fact that you pay it off every month is irrelevant.

I know that it is a loophole. I know it is common sense. I just never heard of a store refusing the transaction before.
