Instead of getting paid OT he may have been getting bonuses. Maybe being non exempt he won't but will get paid for OT

If he is marketable and can easily find another job and isn't totally content otherwise, he probably should consider at least trying to raise a stink about it.

Also, how many hours/weekd does he work? Could this possibly benefit him and he get a pay raise out of it?

Nah, just a dude with 100+ employees at a Fortune 500 company that ended up getting unionized and who spent more time in HR than any rational person would want.
