Why Ben Simmons isn't the top prospect in the 2016 NBA draft - Yahoo

Hard to disagree with anything in this article.
quote:
1. Simmons’ lack of competitiveness in some crucial games has raised questions about his character as a basketball player.
quote:
2. Simmons’ box scores have grown increasingly hollow.
quote:
3. The report on defending Simmons in the half-court is well known and has been utilized effectively in recent weeks.
quote:
4. The concerns about Simmons’ character didn’t magically appear the moment he arrived on campus in Baton Rouge. Those who know him best say he needs things to revolve around him on and off the court and that he's often been close-minded to coaching or instruction.
quote:
Although he's not the generational talent he's been sold as by some, he's a unique prospect who could emerge as an incredible asset to a team down the road if he's willing to address his flaws.

"Splash Reports" -Sean Payton

Scouts are wowed by his size and athleticism. They all think they can build a jump shot into his game. That's why he'll be the #1 pick.

Really? This might be the dumbest thing I've ever read about his game:
quote:
At times, it appears he only passes when guaranteed an assist and chases home-run plays at inopportune times in search of a highlight.
He's been criticized all year for being too unselfish with the basketball, and now it is a criticism.
quote:
Teams are putting smaller players on Simmons, backing off him and daring him to shoot. Simmons seems to have zero confidence in his outside shot and becomes passive when guarded this way.
Actually, they were doing the opposite. He's least effective when large bodied players back off and contest him at the rim.

Because he's done it a ton when no one was between him and the basket. That's where that knock is coming from.

So he's literally passed up the highlight play for the assist....
Come on, that was an idiotic statement.

so basically everything we have been saying on here. yet we keep getting bashed. The kid is an outstanding player but there is no denying the holes in his game.

Number 2 is garbage.
If he is having a good game, what more can he do? IF the rest of the team sucks around him its all of A sudden hollow? Go look at his Points in the last few games.
"padding stats in blowouts" is just highsight bullshite. If a guy goes 23/13/6 on 67% shooting look at the rest of the team when they lose by 30. What the frick else is he supposed to do?

Australian players and coaches who have been around him don’t speak about him in flattering terms, calling him “the Yank” to highlight how different he is compared with most of the players from that country, and perhaps highlight how much moving to the United States at a young age and immersing himself in the AAU world has shaped him.
Sounds like a pretty huge reach to me. Would love to see the writer actually support his statement.

Just shoot it Simmons!!.. oh nevermind. BRICK!!!

It's so easy for people to shite on the kid once the season is over. We didn't have our best shooter for half the year, we ran NO OFFENSE thanks to a special ed coach, and our PG hated Ben because he's too hoodrat to see the benefits of playing with him.
Ben is going to be exceptional in the NBA and I love everyone coming to bash on him.
People magically forget Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard had zero outside game when they were going to the NBA.

Exactly. Why on earth would you put a smaller player on Simmons and then sag off of him? You are giving him exactly what he wants, a smaller body to be physical with and get to the rim with little to no concern of having a shot blocked. Only Johnny Jones would think this is a good idea.
Whoever wrote this knows little about the game of basketball.

American players reared in the same AAU world run the NBA so it's a pretty stupid reach as well.

Yep. This writer knows virtually nothing, but LSU fans are jumping all over it because it's enjoyable to kick him while he's down.

It was an awful season. He's a young kid who had barely ever lost in his life. It was an extremely tiring and probably draining season on him. I hope he kills it in the league, and I truly think he will.

I wish Simmons the very best. He needs a change of venue, this year didn't turn out like anyone expected.

I've mentioned it in the other threads on the issue. He's going to get to the pre-draft workouts and the scouts/coaches are once again going to fall in love with his ability and high-level understanding of the game. He will separate himself once more by the time we get to June. He came into this season with a ton of expectations and he's paying the price for underachieving team led by a coach that has no business being at a major conference program.
Just like last year when Mickey and Martin went in the top 33 of the Draft, prepare for this question: "how did LSU not have better results with this guy?" Unfortunately, it will be the same answer to the same question two years in a row.

Can somebody explain this to me? Am I just over thinking this statement or is it just dumb? Serious question.

This may very well be true. But you have to think that nba teams are considering this in their evaluation. What's he going to do if he goes to philly and has to endure a 15 win season? Is he going to get better and improve his game or is he going to just go through the motions?
