Down to Muschamp and Jimbo Fisher. Interesting battle.

Muschamp or Fisher?

I for one am interested in this one, because although I grew up in BR, I graduated from USM and I think either would be a great Choice.

Jeff Bower did well in his 17 years there with 14 winning seasons, but he became mediocre and they fan base followed suit.

USM is in dire need of a coach that will bring excitement to the program and I think either coach will be great,

Why would they have fired Bower?

Isnt it hard enough to have success at a school of that caliber, seems like he was doing really well at it

Alot of people in Hattiesburg were becoming quiet tired of 7-5 seasons in the C-USA and just because they go to the "Trailor Park Piggley Wiggley Bowl" doesn't mean they have a winning season.

The alumi had to come up with 600k to buy out his contract, plus pay him 125k for the next 2 years.

Bower is a very respected man in the town, but I for one don't think that "Being Nice" wins championships. People were tired of playing "Big" name schools for homecomings or whatever just to be stomped into the ground.

The four names they were looking at Jimbo, Muschamp, Nix and Ellis Johnson. They only paid Jeff around $250,000/yr.

I just cant see why Jimbo would go anywhere outside of a BCS conference. I dont know what he gains from taking that job.

Seems like a good fit for a young guy like Muschamp, prove you can run a program.

Same reason LSU fired Dinardo. He had some good years early, but he's underachieved for the last 7 years. Without Nix as DC, Bower's been below average. USM fans don't expect NCs, but they do expect to win conference championships. That's not asking too much in CUSA.

Lost to Rice (winless at the time) at home on national tv and got drummed by Boise on national tv. Those things didn't happen at USM in the late 90s. Bower was stale.

"The four names they were looking at Jimbo, Muschamp, Nix and Ellis Johnson. They only paid Jeff around $250,000/yr."

it was $350,000 per yr base so yeah still underpaid but the alumni basically got fed up and said, "ya know? we dont have to settle for mediocrity anymore, we are gonna pony up". so only 2 weeks after losing to Rice on national tv they came up with $600,000 and then went to the AD with the money. Done Deal. we have money we just have been knowingly underpaying.

its almost just like SMU in Dallas. they have much more money than we do but most people dont know they have more money than most colleges in the United State. I am not exaggerating. They are about to finalize a deal with Johnson from Navy for about $1.5-$1.8 Million. they can afford ANY amount they want.

USM, within reason, can do the same. the alumni money is there. They just had to finally get their heads out of the sand, quit sitting on the couch eating potato chips and get with the program. we have one of the nice athletic facilities in the country(only 5 years old) and are about to expand to seat around 40K which is an upgrade from 33K but plans are to raise that level and also build in the other side in the future. Hattiesburg has also grown a great deal in the last 5 - 6 years and has been named as one of the most livable cities in the southeast.

And LSU paid the OC and DC's more than that. Out of the 4 names, list your top to bottom guys.

How do you think his offense will work in CUSA? SMU has been recruiting for the Spread. And what kids in the Dallas area want to play that offense? In the state of Tx.?

I'd like to see them do good... I talked with someone tonight that told me what S. Miss was looking for in a coach, it was interesting.

For what its worth, and I know you weren't directing this to me, Johnson has repeatedly and emphatically said that if he had the capability he would throw the ball a lot more.

He's an offensive mastermind, I think he'll develop a balanced system down there and further raise his value.
