There are plenty of stories of people taking even stock Sports and running the trail. It isn't easy, but a Rubicon will do it with the locked diffs and higher clearance.
I don't think you can do every obstacle, but that was never true anyway. Jeep marketed as conquering the rubicon trail while only running certain parts.

I have a 83 cj7. CJ is best generation of jeep. Mine is mint and all original. Stick, no air, no top, no doors, kick arse stereo... So much fun!

Hi, the toyota 4runner, tacoma, lexus gx460, nissan xterra, nissan frontier would all like to say hello.
I own an xterra. I think VERY highly of them. A stock Rubicon is the premier off the lot / stock vehicle for off-roading from all of the reading I've done even prior to owning a jeep. The aforementioned are all kickass I'm sure. I love all cars... and I'm not trying to start a war with ya, bud. It is just more evident that most people would agree with my sentiment.
Dana 44 axles, a 4:1 t-case, two solid axles, plenty of ground clearance, lockers, disconnect swaybar, and can go through water as long as you can see the hood... all pretty slick.
Also, as I have read, most of these vehicles mentioned would do more than a noob would have the balls to do... so it's all really irrelevant in terms of practicality. As daily drivers the non-Jeep choices make for more day to day practical.
For an experience that is one of a kind, then Jeep.

No power to haul a trailer. Not very comfy. Bad fuel economy. They can break often. Not the best vehicle to have during the winter. Over priced always.

Last time I went camping with a few friends, we had to go down an old gravel road to get to the camp site. Now, the road was a bit washed out, but my Cherokee and my brother's Grand Cherokee made it through with no problems.
My friend's pig of an XTerra promptly got stuck because it was too damned heavy and we had to waste over an hour before getting it unstuck.

I just bought a 2000 Sport for $4500. Needs some work but I'm slowly doing it myself

It's almost always the driver. I think if you took a professional driver and put them in all 3 of those rides, the xterra off-road model (2005 or newer) would rock a standard cherokee or grand cherokee. thing has a rear locker and hellacious torque.
but that's just like.. my opinion, maaaaaan. :)

So because your friend is an idiot, his vehicle that weighed significantly less than the grand cherokee must be too heavy and be a poor offroader?
If you're gonna dog on xterra, go after the fuel mileage and shitty stock approach angles, their offroad abilities are more than established.

You're ASSuming quite a lot. The XTerra is too heavy for anything more serious than a dirt road. A 4x4 Cherokee will eat its lunch on logging roads.

MSRP will get you there. If we're strictly talking about new, fresh off the lot. But I am talking to King Ranch, so money must not be an issue!

People that don't know shite about off roading, talking about off roading are fun to watch.
