Demps - Asking AD to Move Mountains

Pretty good article on Real GM which summarizes many posters feelings on Demps' New Orleans tenure:
Asking Anthony Davis to Move Mountains
Asking Anthony Davis to Move Mountains
quote:
Seventy percent of lottery winners go bankrupt within a few years, a precariously similar reality facing the New Orleans Pelicans, who currently have just one player on their roster they drafted. Dell Demps bet his GM job and the early career of Anthony Davis on ball dominant guards in Holiday, Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans and Rivers, along with traditional lumbering centers just as the NBA was moving toward ball movement, spacing and shooting. The Draymond Greens and Jae Crowders and Avery Bradleys the Pelicans need who can shoot three-pointers and defend multiple positions at a high level are far more difficult to acquire than the Gordons and Evans that look like they're capable of carrying a team's offense if the NBA was still playing as they were 15 years ago.
quote:
Outside of the trade for Asik and subsequent contract, none of the moves are awful on their own but the lack of any complementary foundational pieces alongside Davis makes the project steeped with issues and those moves look terrible in the aggregate. The Holiday trade could have conceivably become a slightly lesser version of the James Harden trade if not for the injuries as they were getting a 23-year-old two-way guard coming off an All-Star appearance. The Pelicans have correctly identified Holiday as the player still capable of being an adequate secondary piece around Davis and considered him untouchable leading to the deadline.
quote:
The back of the Pelicans’ roster is even filled with veterans who won’t be in the league much longer instead of developmental players. Kendrick Perkins, Toney Douglas, Alonzo Gee, Luke Babbitt and Norris Cole are all likely on their final NBA stops. The signing of Bryce Dejean-Jones was at least a move in the developmental direction...
quote:
There’s a lot of formulas of how to build around Davis that require minimal strategic genius and the consolation of going through this now before Davis’ extension even begins is there’s time to withstand the bankruptcy and figure out how to fix it.

worst part of that article
would'nt it be nice of have Crowder, Green or Middleton, hell even Barton. Instead we have Alonzo Gee.
quote:
In 2012, New Orleans was one pick away from Andre Drummond and instead were left with Austin Rivers. The Blazers selected Meyers Leonard one pick later, who is the type of stretch center that would fit beside Davis infinitely better than the $75 million two-headed center of Omer Asik and Alexis Ajinca. The Pelicans didn’t have their own second rounder in 2012 as part of a 2009 trade for Marcus Thornton; that pick became Jae Crowder and the next pick was Draymond Green with Khris Middleton and Will Barton coming a few picks later.

Because everyone knew those Second round pick guys were going to be great

As much as it's unclear which direction the team wants to head in, not trading for Rudy Gay or trading our 1st for someone better is hopefully a sign that they are ready to at least change direction.

The biggest downfall of this team was health. In 4 years we never seen this team healthy play for long stretches. I agree Dell should have at least developed 1 rookie but if the team from day 1 were heathly and stay healthy we were a 2 round playoff team luring in big name FA.

The odds of the entire roster that Dell constructed staying healthy is miniscule. Evans and Gordon have always missed games. Jrue had a serious injury that Dell did not discover in due diligence during a trade. (I would be suspect of a team willing to unload a young all star). Asik is a 30 yr old big who was frequently injured (calf injuries, thigh injuries, unexplained swelling in knee) when we traded for him from Houston. Part of the reason Pondexter was on such a good deal is he has missed a season with a stress fracture in his foot and is injury prone.
Not only did Dell compile all of these players with injury histories and pray that they would all miraculously stay healthy, but he developed no young backups.
Healthy seasons aren't all luck.

No he is wayyyy to careless with picks. He should always keep a couple of seconds and not to throw them around like he does but you can't fault any gm for not hitting in the second round those gets are getting picked that late for a reason.
IMO Dell biggest downfall
1. He won't accept sunk cost
He did it with Gordon who did not want to play here, he major knee surgery and refused to rehab. But due to him being the key piece in cp3 trade he kept him. Dell knew Gordon wasn't worth 15 mil which is why he offered him 10 but he would not accept sunk cost.
Asik was a big disappointment last year but due to trading a pick he didn't want him to walk and he over payed.
2. He had too much hope
Every year he had hope for this roster to stay healthy. Instead of going out and trading for more durable guys. He always had to much hope that this core will finally get healthy and win.
3. Getting high character guys and young vets. I understand he did this to keep AD leveled but at the same time those guys perceived to have a bad attitude are also the guys who hate losing the most. Unless a guy was a cancer to the team those guys should be welcomed. Also looking for guys who understand the game with high IQ other than just going after raw talent. Talent can't always be improved IQ is rarely.

Especially when you are knowingly going against medical advice with injured players.

none

The Pels have played the Spurs surprisingly well since AD arrived. Granted we haven't seen the playoff Spurs, but in the regular season at least it seems to be a decent matchup.

We would have a chance vs LAC and OKC
Jrue
Reke
Q
AD
Asik
Cole
Gordon
Ryan
All health is a damn good team that could score from anywhere and that starting unit defense would be damn solid.

Not if they were fully healthy as well.

That is an okay team. A 6th-8th seed if everyone stays healthy, but not if they are trying to play a ball movement system.
Also as to Demps roster construction. If you are already a contender you can have veterans at the end of the bench who can sustain some until your injured player gets back. If you are not and know there will be injuries, then you have young guys at the end of the roster and hope if someone goes down that they grow and show potential to be more than an end of bench guy.

Pressure is mounting on Dell a bit. The national media is taking notice and giving a shite.
I probably hadn't heard the Pelicans mentioned on ESPN radio more than twice, and for the 2nd time this week, Mike and Mike destroyed the Pels this morning.
CWeb was on this morning and pretty much lit up Demps. He said several times the time is now to blow it up and start over a bit.

Mike Dunleavey Sr and Jared Greenberg have been hshredding Dell over the last several weeks leading up to the trade deadline. Justin Terminy thinks it's a travesty that AD is wasted in New Orleans and that Dell is an abject failure. Eddie Johnson has also been highly critical of Dell and the firing of Monty. Lowe has been writing pieces. The national media has nothing, but criticism for Dell for his failure to build around AD.

you never know, but, I'll tell you what we do know. If you don't have a pick at all, the chances of a draft pick becoming great is 0%.

You do know OKC didn't make the playoffs last season, right? If you followed the Pels you would have seen that we took the 8th seed from them.

Not a Boom supporter, but just because we took the 8th seed last year does not mean we defintiely would have beaten OKC in the playoffs without home court advantage even lacking KD. Even fully healthy, there is very little chance this team would beat OKC with KD in a 7 game series without homecourt advantage.

I'm just wanting solutions and not regurgitation of past things.

This.
The roster is currently built of young vets who are pretty much showing their peak and a young superstar who hasn't reached his ceiling.
Trading away draft picks and ignoring player development, scouting, and drafting pretty much puts ALL of the weight on your superstar to bring you to the next level.
