It's not even that - once they fully mature/reach full height, they have much longer levers in their arms and legs to deal with, and all that training they did - the muscle memory is hard to steer at that point. They can maintain flexibility through the mid-20s and even strength-for-weight improves - a little - but that leverage and balance they had with the smaller levers - there's just no recovering that as they mature.

Dudes are lucky as it is far more a strength game - those cats are short to begin with, so maturing to about 25 is a pretty consistent path for them.

But, for girls? 21 is old now in "women's" gymnastics.
