Freddy Adu seems to be the most obvious. Many are talked about as possibly being one of the greats and don't pan out for various reasons. Adu didn't have health issues or drug problems or anything like that. He just wasn't ever even close.

Everyone saying Freddie Adu, keep in mind he was 15-16 when all the hype started.
He "claimed" he was 15/16.
Aren't there pretty solid rumors he is 2 or 3 years older than his claims thus explaining his domination in youth levels before people caught up with him?

Yeah, Adu just sort of peaked in youth.
Marinovich got into heavy drugs and just quit on football...and decided to hang out at the beach and surf.
We are also forgetting about the man who was going to win 3 Heismans according to Beano Cook and Mel Kiper said he would be the #1 pick as a freshman in the NFL draft (if he could enter it.)

American development, or lack thereof, is what did him in.

I don't deny the faults with our developmental system, but that certainly doesn't explain everything. We have produced plenty of players better than Adu.

Not the biggest. Just haven't seen him mentioned.

Sounds like there is broad agreement that he was much Adu about nothing

Eric Lindros was supposed to be the "next one" in the NHL in the 90s, but concussions probably stopped him from living up to the hype.

I mean I get it, but when you weren't even drafter #1 overall, you can't really compare to others that have been mentioned in this thread.
It isn't like he was a high schooler who went #2, this was a guy who everyone saw for 3 years and the Texans still decided Mario Williams was a more important piece.

The only answer is Freddy Adu. For those unfamiliar, here's the list of clubs the savior of American soccer has played for since entering MLS at age 14:
Crazy to think he's still only 26

Sadly the new savior of American soccer is having a similar career

Yup gotta be Adu. It's pretty sad TBH.
The age issue with Adu is a total farce by the way.
Who would that be, I know you aren't talking about Julian Green.
It's likely Christian Pulisic at this point or Matt Miazga. You could put Gedion Zelalem in that convo as well.

Two years ago the hype around Green was that he was the savior. Obviously now Pulisic, Miazga, and Zelalem all have brighter futures

I thought it was a pretty big fail that Harry Potter didnt choose Emma Watson over Ron's ugly sister
