Article just posted on ESPN

quote:

as Wednesday night’s 94-83 loss at South Carolina proved, even when Simmons is aggressive, it still doesn’t guarantee a win for the Tigers or victory for fans who want to enjoy the Ben Simmons Experiment, which will end once he declares for the NBA draft in the coming months.

It’s not working. Everyone involved deserves more and better.

Sipping fine wine at a dive bar doesn’t make sense. But that’s how this season feels with Simmons. We have this incomparable 6-foot-10 athlete but it’s so hard to appreciate his abilities when he’s playing for a bubble team in the SEC.

Sure, he finished 9-for-15 (21 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals) in a road win over Auburn. Then he excelled in a 7-for-11 outing (16 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks) in a victory over Mississippi State on Saturday.

And after a rough first half in Wednesday’s game -- a loss that squandered the Tigers’ chance to hold onto sole possession of first place in the SEC -- Simmons unveiled some of his unique gifts. He played point guard and helped the Tigers overcome a seven-point deficit in the second half and the tie the game with just under 11 minutes to play. He slashed. He made key defensive stops, and a few ill-advised choices on defense, too. He dunked. He maneuvered however and wherever he wanted despite South Carolina’s constant doubles.

After he picked off an inbounds pass and got fouled on the other end, Simmons slammed after the whistle and stared at the South Carolina crowd. In a dunk earlier that half, he cut through the lane and flexed after the flush.

He recorded 20 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks Wednesday night.

Still, another loss and now a three-way tie atop the SEC (Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina).

And it feels like a waste at this point.

More in the link.

It will be such a bummer if LSU doesn't make the tournament...

Another reporter trying to make the news instead of reporting the news.

LSU is in great position to win the SEC and the season is a waste. OK.

As well as he played tonight, he needs to hit his free throws. He left too many on the board for us.

And outside of tonight against a team that is undefeated at home, this team has played pretty damn well at full strength.

I understand your point, but there is a significant chance that LSU misses the NCAAT altogether, and that would certainly be a waste, no?

Yes, it would be a waste. LSU has been playing good basketball overall though.

Can we change the title, please? Makes it seems like you're quoting Simmons.

Is he a great potential or a great player? He is a part of what makes them a bubble team.

I wish they would just call out Johnny Jones for being a horrible coach. The truth is with Alleva Johnny won't be fired this year unless we lose 5 /7 and don't make the tourney.

Reading that small portion of article hurt my brain. The writing is horrible. The grammar is horrible and ESPN is horrible.

This article is a joke. Its like the author hasn't bothered to watch more than 5 SEC games this year.

This is the strongest the SEC has been in basketball in quite some time, when you talk about getting 5, possibly 6 tournament teams in.

Hopefully it means JJ is gone. What a waste.

I'm hopeful for this team as I've been going to these games my whole life, good and bad years, but like I've been saying all season... We've got a long way to go. It says a lot that we're in 1st and yet we're still "on the bubble". I said all year that it would take 13-14 wins in the league to dance, but our pre conference play has hurt us badly. So we're 8-3 with aTm and Florida at home, and Kentucky away. If we lose any of the 3 of those we'll be a 14 win SEC team at best. As bad as Arky is, that won't be easy on the road, nor will Tenn. If we get in, you can thank the super star attention 25 is getting us. Let's finish strong Tigers! Here's to hitting your free throws!

Bubble team? LSU will absolutely make it. They are tired for first. ESPN wants Ben in. An 8th-11rh seed. Bookmark it.

Tied for first in the SEC.......The Horror!!!!

WTF is up with the guys questioning Simmons even going to LSU? I have never seen that with a player at another school. What other schools have had players that can stack up to Shaq, Pistol, and Petit?

Kind of feel like telling ESPN to eff off.

So I will.

Eff off, ESPN.

As an LSU fan, I appreciate my team year in and out. I follow it closely, enjoy its wins and am sad when they lose.

No player is a "waste," no season is a "waste." The season is ongoing. The team appears to be improving. They have several key players are very young. I think the coach has done a good job of coaching them this year. I look forward to each game, the rest of the season, and am cautiously optimistic this team will rate an NCAA tourney invite and make a run in the tourney. At present, my team is tied for first place in its conference, which really is about as well as you can hope for (other than being in sole possession of first place.)

Thanks for your interest.

Jesus.
