I love that movie and no one seems to talk about it anymore. I have it on DVD.
My pick is Fight Club.

Does it have to stick to the book closely or just be a good movie on its own?

The Godfather. Puzo must have been coked up when he wrote the book because it was complete trash. There was an entire chapter devoted to the size of Lucy Mancini's vagina. It shows you the talent Francis Ford Coppola had to polish that turd into a movie as good as The Godfather.

I loved Count of Monte Christo. Thought Guy Pearce carried the movie as a villain.
It took a lot of liberties from the book which it needed to do to make a better movie. Same as with Last of the Mohicans.
I'll throw in Gone With the Wind. Both movie and book are classics.

Here's one I never see posted in these threads.
Payback with Mel Gibson it's based on the Parker novels by Richard Stark aka Donald E. Westlake.
I love this movie if you've read the books Gibson was Parker.
If you haven't read the books you should they're real fun... Richard Stark Parker novels
