Still, the Pelicans are clearly trending upwards. They've just about played .500 ball since Nov. 20, going 16-17 while ranking No. 8 in offensive rating and No. 18 in defensive rating. In their last eight games, the Alvin Gentry-led offense is second-best in the NBA with a 113.8 offensive rating, trailing only the incredible Warriors. Even with players going in and out of the lineup with injuries (what's new), the Pelicans are finally cobbling together an identity and a workable rotation.

Really wish we could keep ryno for a few more years at this price level. Happy for him, but shame we won't be able to afford him after this year.
Posted on 1/30/16 at 1:16 pm to JohnnyKilroy
They could have kept him if they did a better job of distributing money and had young cheap talent. They still might try.

Not at 18 mil though
Has nothing to do with distributing money or anything like that
40+ mil between AD and ryno....no

Let's say we try to keep ryno and we can sign him at 3/39, do you want him at that price?
I think the ultimate goal is finding a better SF who can be a threat both ways. I think a solid SF would be of more use ryno and ad than anything.
I think the reality is you either sign eg for cheap or you go ahead and send him and reke to find a SF.

3/39 is a pipe dream imho
Detroit is already interested and they can easily top 13-15 a year
Yeah he's fine at 12-13 a year but I highly doubt the market will do that.

Of course it's a pipe dream, but him leaving 5-6mil on the table to stay in something he may do.
We can't cripple ourselves with 50million to 4 bigs (aa, AD, asik, and ryno) if he did demand max

i hope he decides to stay, I mean if he really is happy here he may take less.. you never know. for some guys being in a good situation is more important than money.

If teams are offering 16-20 he won't be taking a 3-6M discount to stay here. Sac may want him and he may really want to go there seeing as he's from the area.
As someone said, distribution isn't the problem. The problem will be that at least one if not a few other teams will offer him way more than he's worth. Some 11-7 seed team will offer him a ton of money to be a number 2 guy on their team.
Teams will be able to offer him more money AND a "better" role. I wouldn't fault him for leaving when that's inevitably the case.

A few things-
They can go over the cap to re-sign Anderson. In terms of this summer, his price isn't as much of a concern as is his cap hold.
They shouldn't max him out or anything, but paying him ~$15-17M isn't necessarily insane if they think he's worth it next to Davis. No one really knows how this summer's market will play out. I doubt Anderson sniffs a max, even from Detroit, but anything is possible this summer.
It has a lot to do with distributing $. Paying Asik/Ajinca $15M/year for the next 3 years is problem when they can't play together. Paying $55M for this foursome is a cap disaster.
IMO, I'd rather spend $40M on Anderson/Davis than $36M on Davis/Asik/Ajinca + whatever they get to replace Anderson. You can find a reasonable backup big for less than what they're paying Asik/Ajinca

17M/year for a bench player is insane.
Davis isn't moving to the 5 anytime soon and Ryno is only good on one side of the ball. He will be paid a lot of money, and some team will get a pretty damn good player, but a bad contract to go with it. He's a very good role player who will be paid like a difference maker.

Um, Davis already spends a good bit of time at the 5.
The key to my post is " not necessarily insane" and "if they think he's worth it next to Davis." If they think they work well together and can finish games, then they almost have to bring him back. There isn't an obvious upgrade available on the roster or in FA. Again, Asik/Ajinca contracts make keeping him a cap disaster though.
If there is no trade, I'd much rather find a way to dump both Asik/Ajinca or just stretch Asik, than simply let Anderson walk. Yes, he's a complementary player. So what? Every non Davis guy on the Pels is a complementary player. Letting him walk doesn't get them any closer to a 2nd banana. And, yes, the cap spike will artificially inflate his price. The spike will inflate everyone's price this summer. Batum isn't a max player but I bet he gets offers in that ballpark. Is that a bad deal?

Would also add that they need a better big than Anderson next to Davis. That's not in question.
The problem is how to get that big. Anderson has flaws, but he's also pretty good too. The Pels have no young bigs they're developing, no wings that could play up, and their chances in FA are dicey, at best.
ETA: If we look at the stats from 11/20, Anderson has played the 2nd most minutes on the team, is shooting 42% from 3, and has a net +4 (same as Holiday and a DRating lower than Asik, despite playing 400 more total minutes). If we're in a thread discussing and praising the uptick in play from the team, seems sort of strange to dump on a key piece in that rise.

First, remember that just a few years ago the salary cap was $58 million. We thought Ryno was on a good deal in that environment. In 2 years it will be $108 million. That's an 86% increase. 8.5 + 86% = $15.8. This cap is escalating so fast that "normal" deals will seem like sticker shock. Asik's problem isn't that he gets paid too much, he gets paid for too long for what the Pelicans needs should be. I'd have rather have actually over paid him 2/$30 than the 5/$60 he got.
Second, I agree with corndeaux in that unless you're going to completely cheap out on both the center and backup PF, a guy like Ryno is probably a better investment than anything you could get in a true center. I think the real question is could you get away with a Patrick Patterson type in addition to a Biyombo. With AD looking like missing 15 games a year is a pattern, Ryno might be less of a luxury than we like to think. Can a guy like Patrick Patterson put the team on his back and win a game when AD is out?
I'd be more disappointed that we didn't turn Ryno into a pick than that we paid $15 million to keep him. I guess we better hope some good player slips to the Philly pick because I'm starting to doubt we trade anybody besides another small Pondexter/Cole type of trade.

Asik's deal isn't so bad. I think he's only guaranteed 3 years.
Posted on 1/30/16 at 5:25 pm to JohnnyKilroy
He's guaranteed 4 and a small part of the 5th. And the problem is that in 4 years AD should be playing enough 5 that an MLE level big is all you need at center.
Posted on 1/30/16 at 5:28 pm to TigerinATL
My main issue going forward with Ryno/AD is that I'm not confident he'll be able to play the 5 full time. He plays there now when we go small, and its great for offense. Have to see the stats for defense, but idk if thats's sustainable for 36 mins a game for a whole season.
Posted on 1/30/16 at 5:28 pm to Fun Bunch
Trade him to anyone who will take Asik with him.

Love Ryno. I'm done with one way players.
