re: Why does GA Tech not recruit better?

Well for starters it's not like we don't have relatively recent proof that they can excel in athletics. O'leary and Cremins worked around the same academics. In football the coach's system is what holds them back from being consistently good(I mean 8-9 wins every year) in football, so that's solvable.
People keep saying academics but even Harvard massaged things so they could be successful in basketball. UNC's a great school so how did they solve their problem with keeping athletes eligible? They made a major so they wouldn't have to go to class. UNC wanted it bad enough, Tech doesn't.

It's real sad that in basketball, that they managed to downgrade from Paul Hewitt.

I thought for sure Gregory would win there

The problem with anecdotal evidence is just that. Paul (61%) Johnson and O Leary (60%)have almost identical winning percentages at Tech....and as for UNC, and I had to go look this up,surprisingly Tech is 14-4 against UNC since 1998.
So what gives?

O'leary had to build the program because when he took over they were one coming off 3 straights losing seasons and a 1-10 season. PJ took over a program with 11 straight winning seasons.

UNC underachieves in football because they care about basketball.

Well, they won their conference in 2009, and played in their championship game last year. I'd say they are having more success than UGA.

I'm looking forward to seeing Kirby have problems with Paul Johnson's offense

reggie ball stayed eligible for 4 years. can't be that hard academically.
lack of alum/student support
lack of local support
lack of admin support
lack of hot girls on campus (but being in atl should fix that)
too many geeky dudes
weak conference surrounded by the sec
high schoolish stadium

everybody at GT has to take calc, and it doesn't get easier after that. there isn't a "blow off" curriculum there

Their academics were top notch in the 90's but they managed to compete in athletics.
In other words, they've cut back on their cheating. It will ruin a program every time.

I know Kenny Anderson wasn't fricking with any calculus.

Stanford has the best athletic program in the country and has equally rigorous curriculum.

bullshite. One of my friends was a 3 year starter on the OL from 10-12 and was dumber than a box of bricks.

The school doesn't commit enough to athletics. They're happy with being usually above average and occasionally beating UGA with Paul Johnson. His triple option isn't going to attract many big time athletes, and Paul Johnson doesn't seem to care too much for recruiting anyway.

They aren't even the most underachieving athletic department in the state of Georgia.

GT just isn't a powerhouse football program. The best we can really hope for is a really good season 1/2 of every 5 years. We are just never going to consistently compete with the big schools bc we aren't one. Sure we can have really good seasons here and there and most GT fans are pretty ok with that. Now 4-8 or whatever is terrible and heads will roll again if that happens.
Now basketball is a different story and it is 100% the coach. If nothing else, Hewitt proved that the right coach can attract top level talent year after year at GT. We just have a dud at coach right now that can't attract the ATL HS basketball players. Hewitt had metro ATL on lock.

So how do you explain Stanford's success?

Has Stanford been more successful in basketball/football than GT?
Stanford has had a good run in football the last few years but GT has been largely more successful as a whole.
