So the upgrade now is the "privilege" of paying full price for a new phone on a payment plan. The sales chick trying to pitch me on how this was such a great deal lmao.

You were always paying full price...

If you got a free phone with a two year contact and now your contract is more expensive and you're paying a monthly premium for the phone, how exactly is that the same thing?

Explain, sounds like you don't know what you're talking about, on the two year upgrade you got a new model phone at a heavy discount.

I was not happy when I was told it would cost ~800 for an iPhone that's with an upgrade..

When I went to next, my bill went down.

Because the bolded part is not true. Your contract is now cheaper.

You should be getting a 20 dollar or so credit in your monthly plan.
You were always paying for the phone. It was just disguised and hidden in the fees.
How do you think AT&T can just shell out free phones.

But can I keep my unlimited plan?
Posted on 1/25/16 at 6:43 pm to fr33manator
Only if you have DirecTV

Yea but now the charge per line on your plan is much cheaper. Instead of like $40/month it is now $15. So now you're paying $15/month for service and $25/month financing your new phone. It's the same.

I just talked to retention with AT&T, got a Note 5 and Galaxy S6 to renew my 2 year contract for $100.

I do have dirctv.
No more unlimited data. But we have 5 phones, 5 iPads, lap tops, and 2 TV's constantly streaming video and rarily go over.

She said nothing about my bill going down, just that I would be paying installments on a new phone for a few years
Posted on 1/25/16 at 6:51 pm to Breesus
You didn't get a free phone. You usually paid 200 for it. They also give you 25/month off for the 24 months

frick that. I cut the cable over a decade ago.
How do I keep my unlimited plan and still get a new phone?
Posted on 1/25/16 at 6:55 pm to fr33manator
Pay for it. Buddy of mine had to do it that way.

Cornering the market while allowing your only 2 legit opponents to die painfully, but quietly is quite an art.

First, read these two threads:

Thread 2
Now, you really want to get into the math? It winds up being fairly close in the end

Here's the math. Note this excludes taxes and fees (usually about $5/line on both plans, so that's a wash):
Old plan: $100 for talk and text
Lines 1-4: $10 (line charge) + $30 (3GB data) = $40/month. Pay $200 for phone + $40 upgrade fee = $240 upfront cost to upgrade each line.
Total cost/month = $100 + (40*4) = $260/month.
New plan: $100 for 15GB mobile share data. 4 lines sharing 15GB of data = 3.75 GB per line--so you get more data than previous plan.
Lines 1-4: $15/month per line.
Total cost = $100 + (15*4) = $160/month = savings of $100/month compared to old plan while nobody has upgraded.
Now for the ease of calculation, let's say 1 line upgrades to the iPhone 6 on the ATT Next 18 plan (can trade-in after 18 payments/months or you own it outright after 24 payments/months).
Upgraded line: $15 + 27.08 (cost of iPhone per month) = $42.08/month
So old plan was $40/month, new plan with upgrade is $42.08/month = difference of $2.08/month. Now that $2.08/month over the 24 months = $49.92. But you don't have to pay the $240 for phone outright + upgrade fee as before, so you're saving $190 ($240 - $49.92) over the 24 months. Plus at the end of 24 months, you can request to unlock it from the carrier and sell however you wish (trade-in, eBay, Swappa, Gazelle, etc.) just the way you have always done. And if you want to compare apples to apples, you still get the same resale value.
How is this paying more money????
