As for where to move....follow the river for the nicer neighborhoods in town
Traffic isn't bad if you don't live in BFE youngsville or broussard
always something to do
serviceable public schools or affordable private schools
reasonable cost of living
airport is really easy to get in and out of
good food selection for a town it's size

You get the perks of living near Baton Rouge without living in Baton Rouge.

Lived in BR, Shreveport, and Lafayette.
Take Lafayette all day over them. They've listed the pros. Traffic isn't that bad, definitely better than BR (but that's not saying much). Just learn your way around and it flows.
BR is meh. Only pro is LSU
Shreve is ok if you only want a family and go to church
Eta: real estate is starting to drop. By April it will be set in pretty low. Good luck

Pros:
great food
great bar & music scene for a town its size
friendly tight-knit community
lots of activities for families
close proximity to great boating and fishing
less traffic than Baton Rouge, Houston, or New Orleans
Red's gym
Icegators hockey games are fun
far less crime than BR or NOLA
Cons:
downtown is meh
very suburban feel
all of the shopping is in one area
what traffic there is is virtually unavoidable
Soccer Mom city
Public schools are hit or miss

Youngsville/Broussard.
I can get to anywhere in Laffy from Broussard in 15-20 minutes.

Lived in Lafayette for 10 years and really enjoyed it - lived in Greenbriar and commuted to the Oil Center (5 minutes any time of the day). Great food and decent schools (my children graduated from St. Thomas Moore). Thought seriously about retiring there, but choose the mountains instead.

So long as you aren't from here/have family here, you'll be fine.
But you'll learn, quickly that Lafayette is a much smaller town than the population leads you to believe. Everyone knows almost everyone, by association.
The River Ranch area will land you decent status & let girls think you have more money than you might actually have. Close to the newer places worth going out & not dealing with oilfield trash or other negative elements. With the current downturn, you might seriously find a true steal of a deal as far as a place to live in that area.
Just deal with the traffic cameras & parked Speed Vans.

Always heard women are smokin there and are typically more approachable than the ones in BR

Grew up in Lafayette...would never go back to live. To me, Lafayette, despite it's penchant for good times, good food and a somewhat stable economy, it is at its core a sleazy town.

Like others have said, it is most definitely a town. Always have to explain that to people who try to compare it to other cities.

Pros: great food and hot women
Cons: It's Louisiana and it's Lafayette
