the wifi sucks here and my desktop is next to the modem and router. if I want to plug into the internet directly, do I plug a cable into one the Ethernet spots on the router? and can I assure my stepdad that I'm not fricking up the wifi for anyone else?
Restarted and got the silverlight problem fixed

frick y'all
I know it's a stupid question. My son did it at our old place but it was an all in one modem and router
Just making sure I'm doing the right thing. And my stepdad is very particular about this stuff so I gotta be positive I'm not stealing everyone else's wifi power

plug computer directly into modem. bypass router completely.
Win Interwebs
wifi will stop working if you do this. Plug into router if you still want to keep wifi functioning.

Omg so it is my fault the wifi was broken a couple days ago
Do you know how I can connect to the router? I don't see an Ethernet port on it
That made sense to me originally but I couldn't figure out how to do it

You posted a picture of the FOUR ethernet ports on the back of the router. Select one.

That pic was of the router
Here's a pic of the modem

Don't touch the modem.
You need an additional ethernet cord to plug into your computer/back of the router. This will give you a wired internet connection.
If you do not have another ethernet cord you cannot have a wired connection, unless you disconnect the cord from the back of the router and plug into your computer. This will knock out your wifi though.
tbh it is probably best you just deal with the slow wifi.

But I don't see a place to plug in an Ethernet cable to the modem

That blue wire coming out of the modem goes to your router. Get another wire with the same ends and plug it into the router and your computer. Leave the blue wire alone

OK, let me try to make this easy to understand:
Put everything back just like it's shown in pic #2, with the blue ethernet cord running from the modem into the "special" port on the router. Then get a second ethernet cord and run it from your computer into one of the 4 ports labeled "ethernet" on the router. And you're done.

How did the WiFi break? Did you accidentally drop it?

Probably got it wet. As long as she doesn't feed it after midnight it can be fixed.

Required 30 minute break every 4 hours

thank you. I swear I'm not retarded
that's what I did a couple days ago. I plugged a cat 5 (?) cable into Ethernet port 1 on the router and into my computer
the internet went down. I thought it was possibly a coincidence. but then someone posted in this thread that would make the internet mess up
frick it, i'll just watch shitty streaming. besides I think my stepdad took my cable because I was gonna take a pic and can't find it

gold.
solid gold.
eta maybe your stepdad used the cable to fix the wifi you broke. superglue works best but in a pinch he could tie that cable around it to hold it together.

It was a coincidence. Don't listen to them. One tube goes from the modem to the WAN port on the router, and you don't ever change it. The other Ethernet ports on the router are fair game for your computer.

No idea.
