Here's the order:
Coax Connector at wall -> Coax cable -> Modem -> Ethernet Cable (to WAN or Internet port) -> Router -> Ethernet Cable (from any of the other ports) -> Computer
The last two are not necessary if you use wifi. This will keep wifi enabled for everyone else, but you'll have access to a wired connection.

It's pretty simple.
Coax from Cox plugs into the modem as a feed.
Cox modem converts that to Ethernet. You plug the ethernet cable into the WAN port on your router. After that, you have 4 ports that you can plug devices into. Having devices plugged into those ports should not cause any sort of outages for wifi or any other of your devices.
If the internet died when you plugged into one of those 4 ports that are not the WAN port, then it was a coincidence.
