Holy shite, that was awesome. What an accomplishment

yea, it was their first test of landing it on a land based pad. The other two "failures" were attempting to land it on a barge in the ocean.
The mission was launching a handful of satelites (11? 17? can't remember). The booster landing was a secondary landing.

That's pretty fricking cool actually. Cool enough to break character on a cheap joke. Carry on space nerds, carry on.

didn't jeff bezos' company do this about a week ago? huge accomplishment for sure, but weren't they beat to the punch?

They did it with no payload and sub orbital velocities. I don't think they even left the atmosphere. Bezos' was the same thing Spacex has been doing with Grasshopper for a while now.

The landing you are referring to was a big deal as well, but not on the same level as this. I don't want to go on because I don't want to detract from what that other company did accomplish though.

Just to give some sense of scale:

He's not exaggerating.
No one in the space industry thought this was possible only 5 years ago. It's tough to understate how valuable reusable rockets are going to be.

Hats off to Space X. Truly just ushered in a new era in space exploration.
Posted on 12/21/15 at 9:59 pm to Schwartz
It was 11 sats.
I think they reached an altitude of around 650 km.

Why would spaceX build a space port in Central that place is a shithole

Indeed... I have no words to describe seeing that. Unbelievable.

Better than voting for Luke Skywalker and wasting tax dollars on Chewbaccas and spaceships.
Not going to lie, that was pretty good.
I'd argue that with a vote for the modern Democrat it's more like voting for Jar Jar Binks and wasting tax dollars on deathsticks.

IF they can reuse, this is a new age in space.
Posted on 12/22/15 at 12:22 am to TunaTigers
They will probably not reuse this rocket, but the major hurdle is cleared. This rocket will be torn down and inspected like no other so the next one will be even better.
