Trust me young job force OT'ers this is a very important one. Never ever ever initiate a call to HR. Believe me they are not there to help. And if called on by HR pretend you are being being interviewed by cops and give as little info as possible. Answer only direct questions using "yes" and "no" if possible. Do not get wordy in your responses. In fact you probably have more rights when being interviewed by the cops. At least there you can say I want an attorney.
This is scary

We are eliminating your position
Code for
1. We are hiring a younger person who will work for 1/2 of what you do
2. We want to fire you but are afraid of a lawsuit
3. Firing you will be unpopular with the rest of the company so we eliminate your job and create a new position with a different job title

Starting off we can only offer you x but we will get you a bump in pay ASAP!

Nailed it
This happened in my company this time last year, and I was the one who filled that gap. I am significantly younger, paid less and have been given a different title.

yep, worked for a plant contractor for 6 months for dog crap, then got a tiny bump of 1.50 and was pissed(not eligible for 1 year for another bump). They were offended that I wasn't grateful. A month later I put in my notice, and switched to a competitor($3/raise). 30 days later, my original employer lost the contract because the supervisor was exposed for fabricating compliance docs(which I told them was happening and they did nothing..initially). 90 days later they re-hired me to be supervisor at an additional $4.5/raise + company car.
So in 120 days they went from 1.50 is a great bump for someone with so little experience to if we pay you an extra $7.50 will you please come back, we will even throw in a car.

So you got a minimum of 3k raise after 6 months with no experience? Oh, the horror

I had experience, just not in that exact field.
Like switching from McDonald's to Taco Bell. Say I was working a McD's for 5 years, and they were "bringing me in" for the min at Taco Bell because I had no taco making experience.

I've found that HR in quite a few companies is by and large a joke. It often involves HR themselves spreading rumors about employees or talking about personnel related matters with other employees that should remain confidential. I've also seen many employees get fired after going to HR for help with a personnel related issue.

HR is there to protect the company not the employees. Same can be said Safety dept. as well.

I do Environmental health and safety for a big plant in louisiana. I would say 95% of the 10,000+ rules on the spreadsheets I make for them are either completely redundant or pointless to begin with.
ETA - most of the rules have a 1 strike policy

This is spot on. It's usually a bunch of women who don't contribute much of anything to the company outside of handling open enrollment annually and the onboard process with new hires. After that, it's playing company cheer leader and planning parties that no one gives a shite about. Then when you're too busy working to attend their stupid parties, they suddenly accuse you of having a bad attitude and not being a team player.
I hate HR. I will not deal with them anymore than I absolutely have to and I don't trust them at all.
