Job Opinion

Looking for a few opinions on a new job possibility. Job would be for same company and same location. I'm 32 and work maintenance at a union mill with quite a bit of seniority. Pay and benefits are both good. New job would be on the salary side. Maybe a small pay cut at first considering the OT that I work now, but would have opportunities to advance in the future and a little more vacation and freedom to come and go from work. I haven't heard exact specifics yet but everyone I talked to said the 401k match would be better too. Was wondering if anyone else has made similar move and what you might think of it?

Why would you not take that?

Salaried is almost always better than hourly. Depending on the type of job. There will be times when you work more hours for the same pay. But, in my experience, there are a lot more times when you work less hours. I haven't worked hourly in over 20 years and i hope i never have to again.

The biggest reservation I have now is job security. Right now with the seniority I have the only way to lose my job would be if the whole place shut down. Couple other little things but that would be biggest.

That's a tough call. Do you have children?

2 kids. That's one of reasons for leaning salary would be the freedom. Right now it's like pulling teeth to go to anything they have during the day at school or leaving early if I need to

The freedom of salary work outweighs the pay potential (within reason, obviously). On salary, if I want to leave at 3 o'clock for whatever reason on a Wednesday, I close the door to my office and leave - still get paid the same. Having that "I'm losing money because I'm not at work" feeling hanging over your head when you take off to do things with your family can really pull you down. I say move forward

Sounds like a tough decision. Deep down you probably already know what you should do. I'd go with that feeling.
Best of luck to you.

i see people show up here at like 2 minutes til and haul arse from the parking lot to clock in so they won't be late. I really hope i never have to go back to that.

Non-salaried position increases are typically smaller than salary. You will see your annual salary growth increase incrementally once you switch. Other perks as well.

I really hope i never have to go back to that.
