My moms parents were from north Louisiana. If you told my grandmother something interesting, she would say "Well don't that beat all!" If it was really amazing, she would say "Well that beats all I've ever seen or heard tell of!"

She still calls black people Negros and, sometimes, the worse n-word. When called out on it, she says it's from the bible. She is kooky to say the least.

Also, when someone is old, she says, "He's as old as Methuselah", the oldest person in the bible at "969 years" somehow. She believes that to have been his actual age upon death. Cannot reason with that.

Pizza was "peeza pie."

Do you want a piece of "light bread" to go with your supper? This referred to a slice of white Bunny Bread. (Do they still see Bunny Bread in LA? I don't ever see it.)

My sweet grandmother would not say something bad about someone. She would always say, " I believe if you can't say something nice, say nothing at all. Therefore I will not say anything about (Mrs Smith). "

As a boy I heard her use that phrase many times.

"Oh my stars"
"Bless thier heart" (mostly a light-hearted put down)

Asked what was wrong with a kid with downs when I was like 6: "he's afflicted" I never heard the word retarded etc from anyone inside my family. Only "afflicted" I think I found out what downs was when we were studying chromosones in like 5th grade science.

"Colored folks"

I was sung the words to dixie as a lulliby by her. I never considered her racist. Was not hateful.

Trashy women were "floozies"

Budella: unnecessary shite that has been stirred. Why you gotta start budella with your sister?

Strubla: person who overdoes something. Look at those inflatables and tacky Christmas lights. Freaking strubla.

Foo yay: dig around in something you're not supposed to. I told y'all to not foo yay in those junk drawers.

Eta: Cajun French/Italian

A wallet was a "billfold"

A purse was a "pocketbook"

The fridge was the "icebox"

The main exclamation was "criminy!" Or even "crimininilty!"

"Three moves is like a fire"
Probably due to the wear and tear on the furniture associated with moving. I heard that from my grandfather. I have mentioned it to some other old timers and they laughed and said they remember that saying.

When my cousin and I were 9-10 years old we often spent the night at Mawmaw's house. Our favorite phrase from her was "Y'all wanna split a beah (beer) ? ".
