Then you find someone to play and work then into the position. How does LSU find itself in a position where the starting lb's next season right now are an undersized senior, a sophomore and a converted DB with nothing behind them?

That is mismanagement of the roster.

These days LSU recruits DB's that are usually around 6'1" - 6'3" and are usually versatile enough to play CB or Safety.

At DE we need our recruit's to be versatile enough to play DE and LB. Fact of the matter is guys like Key, Bower, Teuhema, and others about that size won't be playing DE in the NFL. Even in a 4-3 scheme, the DE are around 270-280 lbs and the inside DT are usually 310-320 lbs. If they play in a 3-4 scheme the DE/DT are around 280-300 lbs and the Nose Guard is usually about 320-335 lbs.

So we should be grooming our DE, especially the smaller ones to play DE and LB.

At WR you see lots of WR in the NFL from LSU flourishing, because they get playing time and get the preparation necessary to play in the NFL. And as someone else said, the WR are rarely overused, beat up, or injured. The same reason why LSU typically plays a RB by committee. The RB's are usually fresh and ready to play in the NFL as are most all players.

Sure you can go play with the Gumps and possibly get some jewelry, but do you want jewelery or do you want a challenge and play somewhere that prepares you for the NFL. If that is what you want. I know the Gumps produce plenty of NFL players, but we have seen on numerous occasions where players from Alabama enter the NFL and don't play up to par until maybe 2-3 years later if at all.

Just throwing this out as a possibility--how about George Brown switching to DL if needed, since he played there in high school & looking at either Washington or
Corey Thompson as possible LBs?

I do think help is on the way at LB in the 2016 class, but playing a true freshman there in the SEC is really taking a chance.

Good try, but it wasn't Chief's fault. Chief seemed to have an understanding with Miles that he would coach the defense, but he wasn't going to kill himself recruiting.

BTW, is it Chief's fault that we signed no running backs three years ago? Is it Chief's fault that we've had many years with no 4/5 star QBs? Welcome to LSU recruiting, man. This is how we roll.

1. so it isn't chive's fault because he is a lazy frick, and it is understood the DC/LB coach has NO responsibility to recruit linebackers

2. RBs aren't a problem we didn't recruit in 3 years ago so we could get LF. that really worked out well didn't it?

3. its dumb to blame QB or RB recruiting on Chavis. Perfectly reasonable to blame LB recruiting.

4. we have at least tried with QBs, it just worked out poorly.

Corey Thompson looks the best to make the move. Nearly the same build as Kwon.

No, not Riley. Riley is welter 2.0. And we wonder why Alabama runs all over us and makes us look like clowns

He needs to pack on some muscle first. Kid is thin. That will take 2 years.

This is why it is Chief's and Les's fault. He was the position coach and not recruiting that looks bad to recruits.

Brandon Harris and Anthony Jenning's were both 4 stars. I know they haven't worked out yet but those are facts.

This was to give them a better shot at Fournette.

Says he is 218lbs on 247. Hopefully, he can transform as Arden Key did over the summer and put another 15lbs. before the fall. Even if he puts on another 10 lbs. then he can play a solid OLB for us.
Kwon was listed at 227lbs last year for a size comparison.

I agree, he is no Kwon, but size wise....the roster says he is.

Compared to the backup LB's we have now . I think Corey is as much of an option as we have. Has game time and is playing a position closes to LB. Similar duties and reads.

I guess we will see. I am sure every option is on the table.

Curious why MJ Patterson isn't looked at unless he's just too slow. Is not big enough (listed at 223 lbs) to play DE even though that's where he is listed.

was wondering what the deal was with Patterson myself. Should be at LB.

Also seems Darren Williams would want to play LB,. He looks like the perfect specimen of a LB both in stature and in attitude. Would be his best shot at the pros.

I know there's little hope, but could Tony Upchurch play LB? He's listed as 6'1 and 241 lb

him and mOuton. All FB's should be moved to LB as we need to get rid of the position all together, at least as a full time position.

Right now we have Fiest, Voories, Alexander, and Riley returning. Fowler, Thornton, Andre Anthony, and Divinity committed. 4 returning players and 4 true freshman.

pretty much all our DE's are LB size. None of them will probably play DE in the NFL due to being to small. Could switch any of those guys to LB but we are already thin at DE as well. But it appears that Clark and Teuhuma aren't going to make it at DE even at LSU so maybe give them a new start at LB and see what happens with them. Would be in their best interests anyway if they eve hope to play in the NFL.

Assuming Beckwith goes pro:

Looks terrible.

eta: If we add from current 2016 commits:

Sam: Fowler
Mike: Riley
Will: Voorhies/Divinity

No way Riley is your Mike next season. If we hold onto Fowler, he'll be there. It's obviously not ideal but we could see two freshmen starting at LB next season.

Out of the returning 4 LB's that are currently playing LB, I would think Fiest would play MLB and Riley, Voories, and Alexander would all be OLB's.

Between the 4 returning LB's, whatever LB's we sign in this class, and whatever players currently on the roster that we move to LB, that we should be able to piecemeal a LB core with a some depth in numbers if not top quality.

But for the most part we only need two on the field most of the time as we usually play a 4-2-5 defense. Should be able to find two quality starters out of all those guys. Hopefully two emerge and take the bull by the horns. I would put my money on Riley and Divinity if I had to pick two right now.
