A flash mob hit a designer store in Georgetown Tuesday evening and stole $13,000 worth of items, according to D.C. Police.

The incident happened just before 6 p.m. at the Diesel store in the 3000 block of M Street NW. A large group of young people went into the store and grabbed several items off the racks, according to a police report. They stole four leather jackets, costing about $800, and an additional $12,000 worth of merchandise.

The incident comes after a group of merchants in Georgetown ended its use of a private messaging service that many retailers, residents and police officers had used to talk about people they thought were suspicious. There were concerns that the service was being used to racially profile people.

Guess they should rethink that.

I don't see what the messaging service has to do with a flash mob.

The entire idea of a flash mob is a lot of people randomly show up at a single place at one time. Even if you had a description of one or two, it wouldn't be that beneficial in this situation.

Flash mob?

So did they break out in choreographed dance moves while shoplifting?

Ah, a large group of young people.

So descriptive.

quote:

Some in the Georgetown area started using the app service in February, 2014 after the business organization — Georgetown Business Improvement District — worked with police in the District to launch it. The service called “Operation GroupMe” was meant, some in the area said, as a tool to try to reduce shoplifting in the area. Georgetown is one of the nation’s poshest shopping districts.

But a look at the bulk of the correspondence over a nine-month period of those using the service had some people expressing suspicions about African Americans. About 90 percent of the photographs that were put up showed blacks. And there were descriptions in offensive language.

The perfect way to dispel stereotypes that people of a certain demographic are more likely to steal is obviously to show up and steal stuff.

Infallible logic.

Let's see. Shop owners become concerned about black criminality. They begin to warn each other about it via private message. Blacks find out and are outraged to be considered potential criminals. To protest they go in and wreck a store and steal all the shite they want.

There is nothing about that that would surprise anybody.

There's a reason why Georgetown residents and merchants have fought to keep the METRO out of the area...
