I really like Chicago but couldn't handle the winters there. If you don't mind that go for it.
Eta: would definitely pick Chicago over Austin and Denver

In my opinion, the winters aren't that bad. Yes, the temperatures and winds can be brutal, but you are inside the vast majority of the time. If you are a runner, you've got to get used to the treadmill. It does cause some cabin fever.
I've found that transplants typically find the worst part of Chicago is when it's March and we've still got snow out. I keep telling them to hold on for a couple of more weeks. Because once those Chicago spring and summers hit...man...you aren't getting any better than that.

You hit the nail on the head. There's nothing like that first sunny 45 degree day in April where you roll down your windows while driving down Lakeshore Drive because it's finally nice out

I'm assuming the consensus is that the north burbs are better than the south??? I unfortunately almost have to live in the south because I work in Whiting

You guys keep that windy City. I would go crazy in blizzards, basements, etc. Give me sun, outdoors, beaches 85% of the year

Pricey? Idk about that. I go 2-3 times a year and I know plenty of single Chicagoans who are making 35-50 k living in the loop who can afford to take international holidays. Now, if your buying a house in the suburbs, that may be different but when I've been, I've stayed in the Gold Coast and I didn't think things were too bad and that's supposed to be the priciest part of the city.

That's the problem. I don't want to be inside the majority of the time due to weather

Depends what you are looking for and price. We're in Old Town and love it.

I could also say the same about Louisiana summers. It's so hot and muggy that you don't want to be out in it. Summer here is exquisite.

I've lived in Nola all my life and frankly, just feel like its the time for a change.
Seems like you have made up your mind already. Do it!

But I love Louisiana summers. I'm outside all the time mostly on the water. It's just a personal preference, neither is gonna be better for everyone.

I just made the move from NOLA to Chicago. It was the best decision I have ever made in my life. Found a job in no time once I got here. Lots of opportunities I never would have had in NOLA.
I have not found the cost of living to be much different. It will be my first winter but everybody I talk to that lives here really doesn't make a big deal out of it.

Are you in the city or the burbs? I am one of the few in the burbs....those in the city seem to enjoy it much more

Housing wise we would rent and live in the city. I know someone who lives on the north side, about a 15-20 minute walk from wrigley and she went there from New Orleans. While I don't know exactly how much she pays in rent, she has a 2 bedroom nice place with her boyfriend and she said it was not that much of a difference from current rental prices in New Orleans.
Winter wise- we are considering taking a 3 day trip between Christmas and New Years to test out the cold.
Tigahlilly that's my line of thinking regarding a job. I work in advertising and in Nola it's just very few opportunities

I'm in the city. I live near Wrigley and work down on Wacker. I take the L pretty much everywhere, it's so easy to get around.

Lived there for 4 yrs and loved it; winters aren't that big of a deal IF you have covered parking..Lived in Old Town which was great, also would consider the Gold Coast..do it

I could never live in Chicago's (or any other city's) suburbs.
