So I ask, what type of guns do you keep at the house for home defense? And what kind of gun do you recommend for home defense?

I have a glock 17 and Sig AR15 11.5" "pistol" by the bed, and also a mossberg 590a1 loaded with 00 buck in the closet, plus a S&W 686+ .357 magnum revolver in the side table by the front door.

Can't go wrong with either of the long guns, but I don't have any children to worry about (that I Know of! ).

As for hand guns, don't get sucked into the caliber debate nonsense. Get a modern striker fire pistol (I like glock) and shoot the hell out of it. Handguns are much harder to shoot with than it looks in the movies, so you need to practice.

Also a weapon mounted light is an absolute must for a HD gun in my opinion. Several good ones to choose from, surefire is pricey but very high quality. Streamlight also makes good stuff and isn't quite as expensive.

With all of that said, the protection of your home starts with mindset and preparation. Lock your doors, get an alarm system, get a dog if you like animals, close your curtains at night, etc. etc.

An AR isn't a bad choice for a woman or anybody else. They're small and easy to operate and hold lots of ammo.

It would take a little more training than a shotgun for someone who doesn't know guns to get good with it, but they definitely give you the ability to hold the fort.

I bought a mossberg maverick 88 the other day for under 200$. Put a pistol grip on it.

I prefer a traditional grip on a shotgun as well. It encourages a good shoulder pocket. I guess AR-10 guys have an advantage, there. They know better.

The only exception would be the Saiga, but that's not my cup of tea, anyway.

And easier to shoot well than a handgun, IMHO.

My wrist is killing me. I might swap it for a pistol grip with a collapsible stock but the pure pistol grip just delivers too much force to the hand.

Depending on your proximity to your neighbors a shotgun might save their lives too.

That seems to be the general consensus on the topic is that Handguns are no good.

They're better than no gun. That's about all they have going for them.

I personally could not care less about your cute little sign. But, if something ever happens and you get slapped with a civil suit this will be a very big piece of evidence. They will use it to say that you were of the mindset of "shoot first" and portray you as an angry, gun toting redneck. And they will probably win.

I keep a Taurus Judge loaded with 3" #4s in my nightstand with a Remington 870 loaded with 00 Buck a couple of feet from my bed. I also keep a 9mm within reaching distance of my easy chair.

I do. A handgun is all that I can practically do it with. I'd be wishing it was something else if I ever needed it. It's better than nothing, but it definitely isn't what I'd want.

Just because you suck doesn't mean shite about anyone else. My gf has my USP .45 and had no trouble shooting accurately with it.

You have to aim with both. This isn't the movies, shotguns don't spread the pattern of shot nearly as much as you think it does at home defense distances.

No they won't. Bullshite thinking you have going on here, the laws are pretty clear when it comes to self-defense inside one's home and some sign isn't going to change that.

Stockless, pistol grip shotguns are meant for breaching doors, not for being aimed with your eye and fired. In that case, they are made for breaking cheek bones.

Do yourself a favor and put a stock on that thing. Pistol grip, or no pistol grip, it doesn't really matter. But a stock beats not having one.

If your barrel is less than 18" though, do not add a stock. You would be breaking the law and could be facing some serious charges. Yes, it is very stupid but it's the law the way it's written today.
