Riley wasn't them settling. It couldn't be. They had better options to settle for.
Riley was their AD's moonshot: he was going to show everyone how much smarter he was than everyone else. He bragged about how little he was paying for Riley for crying out loud.
Nebraska people are too nice is the problem. They should have pushed for his firing when the hire was announced like what happened with June Jones and ASU. Now they are stuck with Riley for a year at least.

Of coarse it wasn't the best option. They could have had Wittingham and he wanted the job too, but the AD is a pompous arse arrogant prick who thinks that he knows everything . Heck he even assigns books for his staff to read.

If they lose out and all those losses are brutal blowouts, Riley will be gone. Losing seasons arent taken too well here in Nebraska, we have only had 2 since 1962, and more than likely this will be the 3rd one. He can finish 3-9 and have the last 3 games close losses and he will stay, but if they are brutal blowouts he will be gone. The big money donors will not stand for it.

Winning seasons don't seem to be taken too well there either.

Husker fans have very high standards. We only like OT 10's. You Purdue fans have low standards so that's why you settle for the OT 3/4

Maybe stick to the arguments you can win? Your corn is better?

Nebraska's next hire has to be a smash. They should look at the NFL

You got one!
Still don't think you fire Riley this year. Nor should you. I'd love a chance to win again next year!

There is a lesson in here somewhere for LSU fans.
"Winning doesn't just happen" - Solich was 58-19 - Top 20 finish 5/6 seasons - he did only have the 1 big bowl (Rose) and lost it, but fired for underperformance.
Callahan was a modest step down from Solich.
Pelini (not counting the Bowl he coached after Solich's last season) went 66-27 - Top 25 (Coaches) finishes in all but his first year - 3-3 in bowls. But, heck he went 39-17 in Conference with 6/7 seasons finishing 1st or 2nd in the division.
Riley is a big step down from either Pelini or Solich. Heck, I'd work something out with Pelini to come back - hell, you're already paying him.

Just to put a final nail in the thread:
LINK
That ends the Nebraska and AD search for this year folks.
quote:
Perlman also expressed support for Athletic Director Shawn Eichorst, who last year fired Bo Pelini and hired Riley. Perlman confirmed he is currently working on a contract extension for Eichorst.

The Mike Riley hire puzzled me anyway. What was the thinking that he was an upgrade over Pelini.

Riley should be fired right now

AD change wouldn't be until the new Chancellor comes in anyways.
We will see how next season goes. I have my doubts. We will see.
