Thinking about making a trip in a few weeks to central Kansas to hunt here.
Just seeing if anyone on the OB has been before and how was your experience?

We hunted there abt 7-8 yrs ago. Was actually very crowded. Easy marsh hunting with hard bottom. Took us a few days to figure out how/where to hunt. By the third hunt we had em figured out. Key is to get as far away from everyone as humanly possible. Don't call alot and they actually decoyed to mojo's (we had to go to town to buy one).

I deer hunt western KS and everyone says Cheyenne Bottoms is extremely crowded and overrated for waterfowl. However, the private land around it is legit.

Double edge sword here. Even though DAPINK gave generic info that could be applied on anybody of water with good result board like this are on reason places have become much more crowded in the internet age. Once something is on the web it is pretty much here to stay and accessible to anybody except the mongolians and north koreans.

Went there last year not long after Christmas. Our original plans changed and we ended up hunting there for a few days. We grinded out some ducks by walking in to some spots we scouted. Our problem was that we were limited to how far and where we wanted to go due to busting ice out there. The whole marsh would freeze at night. You could shoot more birds with the help of a boat, no doubt. It wasn't crowded when I was there, but there wasn't many new birds in that area.

I'd spend a day riding around the area and finding where the geese and ducks are landing in the privately owned ag fields. Landowners will gladly let you shoot if you ask.

On the days the NWR was closed we tried some public walk-in areas with no luck, apparently public rivers/lakes aren't really 'public' too?. We also tried the door knocking thing, out of the 10 farmers we asked only 4 let us hunt. Most blamed previous hunters with leaving gates open, trash, rutting up fields.

wish the rice farmers would be as readily to let door knockers hunt as farmers in other parts of the country are

Other parts of the country don't have dumbasses that will pay $5k for a shitty duck blind. That's why rice farmers lease.

FWIW we have never leased our land. Get asked all the time but 1. We like to hunt 2. Don't have to deal with dumbasses

Who is the dumbass?
1. The rice farmer who won't accept 5 grand for a shitty blind
2. The duck hunter who pays 5 grand for a shitty blind

Opinions?

our farm as a whole provides plenty of hunting. Stuck to one field and it would suck. I couldn't let someone pay 5 grand for a 40 acre spot on our farm and feel good about myself

Then you/your family are the most noble rice farmers in SWLA and I applaud you.

To the OP, I have never been to Cheyenne Bottoms but seeing how much publicity it gets as a "destination" waterfowling area it would be far down on my list of places to target in Kansas, depending on what your expectations are. I do know that there are better resources than tigerdroppings for gathering info on out of state hunting opportunities. I would also try to avoid hunting anything the weekend that upland bird season opens, I know that the Great Bend area of Kansas get quite a bit of pheasant hunting pressure and lodging may be an issue trying to book this late. Honestly I would try to go in December if I was trying to go shoot ducks north of LA

Never been there, but we have a project going on in McPherson not far south of there. The guys I talk to on that site hunt it a lot and said it is plenty crowded. They still seem to find ducks though from pictures I have been sent, however I have never seen any extraordinary hunts out of there.
