Marmot.

It's going to run $80-100 but is light weight, versatile, doesn't make you sweaty while wearing it...and lasts 10 years. I know from experience.

I used to be a huge Columbia fan but I don't buy any of their stuff anymore. I just don't like the quality. They never seem to last long.

I haven't had any problems. This is the first Columbia jacket I've bought in a long time though.

Their quality may have gotten better. I honestly haven't bought a Columbia jacket in about 5 years.

I have an Eddie Bauer gore tex shell with two zip out liners (or various warmth) that I originally purchased in 1994 when I lived in Cleveland.

It's got a hood with a bit of a visor on it that keeps the rain off quite well. I had a half mile trek to the parking garage while I was in dental school during all kinds of shitty C town weather and stayed dry and comfortable.

Twenty plus years of service has it looking a bit dated but it still functions like it did the day I bought it. All zippers and draw strings still are in good shape.

Heck, after this past weekend, I'm off the the EB website to see if I can find a replacement.

Same reason I didn't recommend Arcteryx shells. I have one and it's bomb proof, but it's total overkill for all but the most heavy rainy days. Great for other purposes, though.

Rain jackets and trucks you should never buy new. Find a pre opened online and thank me later.

Ha, I had an Eddie Bauer "Ultrex" bought about that time that was great for about 15 years. The lining eventually disintegrated exactly like what happened to one other guy in this thread.

Like everyone else is saying, my $75-$100 Marmot is excellent. Way better than some Columbia I was dumb enough to pay $300 for.

Marmot makes a bunch of nice ones. I have the super light one and it works well. The only issue is it's so thin you can feel the moisture (although you're not literally wet) so it's colder than a heavier style

I have this and it's a great jacket. Bought it lightly used from geartrade.com for $34. I couldn't even tell anyone had worn it

But the inner lining started to flake and it got to the point that anytime I would move my arm confetti would come out

Had the same thing happen with a Northface jacket.
