For me, subjectively, I like Taylors and Guilds because of the feel to the hands. For whatever reason, Martins don't "feel" right to me. I have played a Martin in a guitar store 1 time that I thought I could grow to love. But, I feel that way about most Taylors, so I admit it is a subjective thing.

Very much so. I like Taylors for a reason that has nothing to do with the way they sound (although to my ear they sound fantastic and feel great too). Bob Taylor has a vision of sustainable guitar-making that nobody else seems to be embracing yet. He is trying to reduce the dependence on 3rd world woods like rosewood and ebony and replace them with 1st world woods like maple. He is also experimenting with more available 3rd world woods such as sapele.

I like taylors more than martins as well

but Collings are better than both!

Very nice. I played one a while back and it was amazing. I always hated maple guitars because they were too bright. The torrefication process they developed makes maple sound like rosewood.

I've been looking for an x12 because I do a lot of fingerstyle and the grand concert seems to be better for that. There's a guy in Denver that is selling a 2015 612ce for $2400 and I'm getting very tempted.

It is a very fair price but it's still more than I really want to pay for a guitar. I'm sure it's worth it though. It's on craigslist and in the pictures it looks pristine.

yea that's understandable. My wife let me buy mine a few years ago and I was very grateful. I just had a birthday and told her don't buy me anything as I still feel like the guitar is enough even a few years later.

I currently own a Epiphone Les Paul custom that Ive had for 12 years give or take. Previously I have owned a few other epiphone les pauls, fender strats and various ibanez axes that were decent.

In my opinion its all in the feel, for me particularly the feel is in the neck. Ive always wanted to try a PRS guitar but I am a believer that you get what you pay for. And Id hate to waste the money on the cheapest model. Im sure you wont get a terrible guitar for 400, particularly if you buy a upscale used guitar, but buying a new 400 guitar I would not expect top notch.

I am also not a fan of all the new "signature" guitars that are coming out just to make more money from a set of pickups put into a base model. seems silly.

in the end; my advice.. buy what feels right, everyones opinion will be different because its all subjective what feels good to them

No truly remarkable music has ever been made on a PRS guitar IMO.

You could get a PRS SE 245 for around this much, and they are excellent guitars for the money. I don't really know how they are able to do it at that price point.

You could get a Mexican strat too.

With guitars there is definitely diminishing marginal returns on money spent. A 3000 dollar guitar is not really six times better than a 500 dollar guitar.

Oh shite - batten down the hatches

To OP, I don't know how anybody here can give any suggestions without even knowing what model of guitar we're talking about - the only information you have is "Ibanez" or "Gretsch." There's a big difference in Ibanez's, from an Artcore box to a pointy-headed RAWK machine. To OP, my one piece of advice is to treat those asking prices as initial offers and don't be afraid to lowball the hell out of them if you do find one you like.
