How should I handle this academic integrity issue at LSU?

I was in my first exam for Drilling Engineering and time was called. I was walking down the aisle to turn in the test and saw I wrote something wrong so made a quick erase. One of the power hungry TA's saw it and took my test up. I went to talk to the professor about it and said I should be good but I have to meet with academic integrity which I did today. She told me since I admitted to having done it that I'll get something like having to take a 2 hour course online and that's it. She said I'll have to collaborate between the professor and her about a possible grade change. As of right now it's a 70. At least 50% of the class being rushed with time does this but I had to reap the consequence. What would you do if you were in my situation about to meet up with the two in a couple of days?

Were you "rushed with time" when you wrote this?

Anyway, honesty is the best policy.

Subtle. But with the job market being what it is, I wouldn't be bragging about that choice at the moment.

Is the TA trying to lower your grade? Keep in touch with professor go to his office regularly with homework stuff.
Stay on professors good side, he's the only one that matters in this situation.

I don't see the big deal. You erased something before you turned it in? Didn't know LSU was run by a bunch of hard asses.

So you made a change after time was called and want to figure out a way to game the system? How about you accept the consequences and learn from your mistake?

Seems like agreeing to meet with the honors committee and taking their stupid course is some kind of tacit admission of guilt. I would have argued that I have the right to change an answer until I hand the test in. Were you scoping other students' papers on the way up the aisle or just walking smartly?

Stfu. Every student has done this before at least once.

In the grand scheme of what happens in academic dishonesty, this is dust in the wind. Since then, I make sure to put my pencil down. I just can't afford to get a zero on the test, possibly fail the class, and then have to wait another year to graduate.

The whole limiting test time is actually a big deal, and the reason isn't you. There are some really harsh federal guidelines placed on professors in the name of equality for students with disabilities.

The one I have the biggest problem with is the double time for folks with ADD/ADHD, and it seems like that's where your problem is as well. It's because they have to be given exactly 2x the normal available time, and if a professor or TA were to give you those extra 30 seconds to fix something, and one of the 2xers found out and didn't receive an additional 60 seconds the professor, department, and university could all end up in a legal mess.

It's drilled into most teachers and TAs nowadays, sorry you got caught. My best advice would be to study more and gain a better understanding of the material so that you can get it done in the time allotted.

I dont get what you are asking. Just tell the truth and app should be fine

I bet you looked at other test papers walking up, saw someones correct answer, and changed your paper. Now you are trying to.convince yourself you didnt cheat.

I saw something similar happen to one of my classmates a week or two ago. Time was called and my classmate was circling an answer literally as the clock hit zero. When he was circling the answer, the TA, who "happened" to be standing right near said student, went super power hungry and ripped the exam out of his hands (this classmate wasn't able to complete the circle). The dude was begging for his test back only to get screamed at by the TA. I'm not really sure why some of these TAs are such hardasses (I'm a PETE major and all of the TAs in other engineering fields aren't fricking ridiculous like the ones in PETE.)

Anyways, try getting on the professor's good side. He is the one who will ultimately decide your grade. Honestly, I took a writing course a semester or two back. This teacher I had was definitely not going to give me an A on my final paper, but when I went to him for help he kind of hinted that he would boost my score a bit b/c I consistently went to his office hours to ask for assistance. Moral of the story, it never hurts to get to know your professor.

I'm not sure if your story is honest or not. I'm not accusing you of anything but you should be 100% honest with both of them, including the exact real reason why you erased, even if it makes you look bad.

LSU goes very easy on first time offenses.

The professor says you're good but may have to take a 2 hour online course?

Done deal.

Don't cheat. Cheating is bad. Take this as an educational experience son.

Always pissed me off when my exam was collected and others were still working. I started to get seats in the middle of the room to avoid that.

Frankly, I am guessing there is more to the story than you are willing to tell. Your post belies a sense of entitlement -- you'd rather blame the TA than admit you didn't prepare for the exam well enough to finish on time.

If you want the grade change, do what the frick they tell you to do. And be nice about it. And try having a better attitude in the future.

Most bullshite part about LSU. They give out that extra time to people like it's candy.
