Is Cox trying to scam customers with the Mini-box?

Got this int the mail today.
Most people have secondary TVs in their homes with only the main ones with receivers
First, I thought everything went digital a couple of years ago and you only needed a converter for old TVs.
Second, what about your digital flats?
Sounds like they have set it up that the only way you get digital is through this little box. All this seems fishy.
EDT: I did some research and apparently, they are indeed doing away with coax directly to TV.

To improve your video experience, we're moving toward the industry standard of providing purely a digital signal to every TV in your home. We'll begin the transition to All Digital on December 1, 2015
As a result, any of your TVs to do not have a Cox Receiver will require equipment like a mini-box to continue getting any TV service. A mini-box is a small device that delivers a digital picture to your TV.
If you already have a Cox receiver on every TV in your home, no action is required.
For a limited time, get 1 mini-box FREE for 1 year ($2.99/month value)

Probably. The sales chick told me it was so people couldn't steal cable anymore but who still does that?

Ota signals went digital, not cable.

Yeah, they are charging our office for each box - $7 each.
Such a ripoff. I hope they lose even more customers to the likes of sling tv.

Well, I subscribe to Cox internet and U-Verse TV. In a seldom-used room I have co-ax going to a TV, which gives me basic cable. Technically, you aren't supposed to do that. The box rental charges are infuriating, though. It's like AT&T separating the charges for service and the charge to actually use a phone on that service.

Comcast did it here several years ago. You get no channels without the box.

And you know that $2.99 charge is gonna go up to $5 in about 3 months. They ain't giving the first year free to be nice.

Oh, that's a given

A lot of people. I know plenty of people that figured out if you have internet, you can hook the cable up to the TV, find and remove the line filter and voila, cable.'

Got mine in the mail today as well, I still have my old tube tv in the bedroom for the occasional shits and giggles viewing while laying in bed.
Oh well. Not paying Cox for anything else besides the main tv.

Let's say 1 million people need to get a mini-box. 1,000,000 X 2.99 = $2,990,000/month
2,990,000 X 12 = $35,880,000/year.
Remember, it's all so Cox can provide better service with more channels.

Charter did it in St. Landry. If you have multiple tv's you need the damn box to get a signal. No difference in picture quality--just a bigger bill!

We already switched over in Nola. The mini box is hd so it's an improvement for my bedroom tv. I like it. Heard they were dropping the analog signal to free up bandwidth.

Going all digital gets rid of the bandwidth hogging analog signals, which lets them add more channels.

Will they allow you to buy them instead of the monthly rental price for the boxes?

Not only that, it allows them to reallocate bandwidth to Internet and offer gigabit without having to upgrade the entire system. That's why I'm not too upset about it. That, and we have a whole home screen so we have boxes at our tvs anyway.

Stopped reading there...
Obviously, fricking yes they are.
Cox / Charter are two of the biggest POS companies know to man.

Which, in turn, lets them charge more

shite, does that mean I'm going to lose my bootleg Cox coming out the coax?
