This is making the news, just had a report on WBRZ. The problem is that they are acting as if this is all legit and that these people truly had lapses. They are completely ignoring the fact that tons (maybe the majority?) of these are going out to people who, in fact, never had their coverage lapse. They just moved out of state, sold their vehicle or changed insurance providers/policies. Why isn't that making more news? I think the people who really were without insurance should pay their fines but they clearly had a horrible way of figuring out just who that was.
They had a woman on there who kind of implied she just paid the fine rather than argue and that pisses me off. The more people who do that the less reason for them to fix their mistakes. Some cop did mention they will work with people who can prove coverage never lapsed. How nice of them to "work with" us since we never did a fricking thing wrong!!!

Yeah most of the articles are somewhat defending the state. If someone let their coverage lapse then that's fine but this is just some horseshite gotcha game by the state.

Yup. I did manage to get through on the phone today. I have to fax them my VA registration that shows I registered here the same day that they have me marked as having a cancellation and letter from the insurance and supposedly that'll show that I never had lapse in coverage (which is obvious, because my policy went into effect 4 days prior to my "cancellation" date). They wouldn't make a comment on whether or not I'll still owe late fees. Have to wait at least 48 hours after faxing them before calling them back again to assess the status.
I actually had turned my plates in as well.

if these frickers send one of these letters, it better be bulletproof, as I will return an invoice for the time it took me to do the research...

This. Haven't read the entire thread. WOuld it be possible to send a cease and desist letter to the OMV like an actual collections agency? We definitely NEVER received any first notice. How the frick would they be able to prove I did?

I agree this is BS
Also, if you owe the State of La money they can suspend your right to buy hunting/fishing license.
I learned this the hard way

I don't know how accurate it is, but there is a new thing on DMV website that is supposed to identify flags on your license?
Here is the link for anyone wanting to check their driver's license.

A lot of the articles are quoting the State Police Commander, Edmunston I believe. Do understand that the initial intention of this fee was to fund raises for the police through out the State. So, he obviousy has a vested interest in collecting all that the DMV can. Case by case, the State will win, but if there was ever a class action suit filed, the State would killed in court as it would have no proof of that first notice. Every legal correspondance I have ever received in the course of my work was sent certified to show proof it was sent AND received.

"Your vehicle registration and driver's license are blocked because our records show you turned in license plate number XXXXXX after your policy number 0XXXXXXXXXXXXX with ALLSTATE PROPERTY & CASUALTY INSURANCE cancelled on 06/30/2014. You must pay OMV a reinstatement fee of $275.00 in order to reinstate this block. If you reinstate your cancellation(s) on the same day the maximum reinstatement fee will be $850.00 plus an additional $25.00 administrative fee per cancellation."
Oh wow..now I want to slit throats This shite must have just been put on there because I got a seatbelt ticket a few weeks ago. The cop ran my license and would definitely said something if it had a flag at the time.
So now I have this PLUS the BS letter. Lawyer time

How can you owe late fees for something you never actually did wrong? This is what makes me the most angry. I could deal with having to call and prove we had insurance but if they are just going to say "oh ok, but you still owe us a late fee..." that is not going to end well. I can't be late on a payment I never owed. This is where a lawsuit should come into play.

agree completely...unfortunately, they can pull this bullshite and 90% of the people will just pay it because they are too scared of the government to contest it.

I had to go to the dmv to take care of this today. Letter stated that my insurance lapsed 4 years ago and that I owed 525 dollars. Brought my payment history on my policy that ive had for 6 years. Showed it and the woman had to go get the supervisor to determine if i still owed.
Supervisor told me that if you shop around for insurance but decide to stay with the same policy a notice is sent to the state saying that the old policy was not continued and the new policy was never taken. Therefore its picked up as a lapse by the system. He said that its a flaw in their system
So basically he said a flaw in their system is going to cost people a shite ton of money

For what its worth my fine was cleared because I took the time to go there and prove my insurance never lapsed.
I feel for the people who cannot do the same because of living out of state
