I haven't gotten a letter but I am sure I will.
The best way for this to get handled in through the media. Maybe even a liberal and national outlet that would love to skewer Jindal even more. I promise you this story would get traction and results.
Again, I haven't gotten a notice so I'm not doing shite, but y'all should.
Free...stop being so dramatic and fricking do something.

Suggestions? Hours on hold to be told that they have no record doesn't seem like it will get anything done.

I moved to Texas 3 years ago and transferred my car a year after. If they take money out of my tax return so be it. Won't be going out of my way to send them money.

I think we had to pay a fine when we moved back to Louisiana for not turning in our plates when we registered in Texas
For me the first thing I'd do is forward the letter to my insurance agent and let him get together documents to prove I never had a lapse in coverage.

I haven't lived in LA since 2001 and I've had 7 different addresses since then
I'm eagerly awaiting this humorous demand for money
moving to the east coast and then south Florida were the best decisions I ever made

If you get a letter, I'm sure you'll be able to show the vehicle was registered and insured in TN within days of your LA coverage being dropped.
nope. That's what I thought. It's $128 for not answering the "first letter".
-------------------------------------------------------------
I'm applying logic and reason in my analysis of the situation. I also realize that the LA Legislature and OMV are involved, which makes the issue much more problematic.
However, if you never had a lapse in liability insurance coverage, which I assume to be true in Bottomland Brew's case, you haven't broken the law. If the first letter was sent in error (if it was even sent at all), how can you be held responsible for the fine?
If you moved to a different and registered your vehicle there in a timely manner, you or your insurance company should be able to provide an adequate paper trail. If you sold or junked a vehicle in LA, it may be trickier.

I haven't received a letter yet, but I'll definitely get my insurance agent involved if the letter does get sent. Honestly, I had no idea that it was necessary to return the plates to the DMV. Not a single person mentioned it during the entire process.

Because in Louisiana and many other states you must turn in your plate BEFORE you cancel/transfer your policy to another vehicle in another state.
I bought moved from LA to GA in 2013 and traded in my car in GA in Dec 2014. I forgot to turn in my plate and they sent the letter to my parents house. If you can prove that your vehicle was traded in and there was no lapse in coverage you pay 125 for not complying to the first letter. The whole thing is BS but I'm not taking a risk to take a hit on my credit from some a collections agency.

Like I said, get the media involved. I surprised this hasn't been the leading story on local news.

I'm confused. People have to turn in their plates if they move out of state?
I still have some old plates in Texas that I have hanging on my garage wall.
And what's with the fines for lapse of insurance if you moved out of state?

Seems like a new scam is going around.
Clearly just the LA govt doing it usual thing.
Wife got one of these sent to her parent's address as well. Coincides with the date we registered and titled the car in VA.
also never received a first notice.

I'm going to call my state representative.
Call any gov't functionary you can get a hold of. Call the news outlets.
Call the ACLU.
Get your torches and pitchforks ready TD! We're going to war!
When the greedy paws of bloated gov't reach in to rob morsels from our children's mouths, will we stand idly by and let it happen!?
NO!

This would seem to be a bit difficult mechanically.
How can you surrender your plate before you get a new one in another state?
Does not make sense to me.

technically you should send your plate in before or at the same time you transfer your car insurance to the new state. It is pretty ridiculous and very cumbersome.

You don't have to send them in anymore. Just need to fill out the notice of vehicle transfer online and destroy them. Which is what I did with my wives plates. Still got the notice anyway.

Father in law spoke to his own insurance agent(state farm) who's under the impression that its a glitch in the system. They have officially turn on the high volume voicemail until they fix it internally.
Guess we will see if this is truly the case.

I think the fact that I spent 2+ hours of my life trying to get the OMV on the phone plus the fact that no one at the OMV can do anything makes me more mad than the fine.
