re: "The Worst Rule in Football" still needs to be changed.

quote:If you like that much chance and luck, maybe you should watch people scratch off lotto tickets?
Because I like it like that?
There are harsh penalties for all sorts of chance-related plays in the NFL. Chance and luck is a part of the game.
quote:The problem is the rule. You can't "solve" a problem with the rules by having players play differently.
Don't be careless with the ball when you get near the endzone. Problem solved. Next topic.
quote:I guess we disagree here, as well. Because the ONLY way things get accomplished is by debating. The rule obviously won't be changed by a debate between you and I, but we can be part of the conversation. If you lack enough conviction in your position to defend or adequately explain it, then have a nice day.
ETA: I'm not going to waste any more time on this debate. You hate the rule. I don't mind it. Nothing is going to be accomplished by debating the shite out of it. Have a good day.
quote:And if the offense is backed up and fumbles out of their own endzone (which they own), the defense is rewarded with 2 points and possession. Does the defense own both endzones?
Another way to look at it. The defense owns the endzone. If the ball is fumbled into and out of the defense's territory, it makes sense to me that they should control the ball.

quote:Unless we're talking about an offense in their own endzone.
What is special is the ball. When the ball is downed in the end zone, it belongs to the team who owns that end zone.
quote:Yeah, the ball is special. It is incredibly important to POSSESS it. That's why it makes zero sense for the defense to be awarded possession without actually having to gain possession.
Better hold onto it if you want points. That's how special the ball is. The ball is so special that the sport is named after it.

quote:They didn't have it at all.
They have it in their end zone. It's their ball.

I agree the half the distance is the worst rule. Back it all the way to the 1 or move it to the 1 if warranted.

quote:No. Preventing the offense from possessing the ball in their endzone is what happens on every play, and the defense isn't awarded the ball. It's called a tackle. There is, however, a special play where possession changes. This happens when the offense drops the ball and the defense picks it up. This is called a "fumble recovery". Perhaps you've heard of it.
They kept the offense from possessing the ball in their end zone. The ball belongs to them.

quote:No, football is about earning everything. It shouldn't be about being awarded possession and a monstrous field position swing on a technicality.
They lost it. They don't have it anymore. It's in the other team's end zone. If they want it back, they have to get it from the other team.
This is football.

I still hate the PI spot foul
I honestly don't mind the spot PI foul. I mean if you really think about it, if a corner is getting beat deep and he knows it, he can trip the guy up knowing that he's only giving up 15 yards instead of a touchdown.
It's subjective and it's not fair that you can get 60 yds on a subjective call.

The worst rule in football is if you fumble and the ball rolls out of the endzone, it's a touchback whereas if it goes out on the one yard line, you're only a yard from a touchdown

quote:I know we aren't really deciding the rules here, but there are still two sides to every fight. If you don't fight back, then all the things that you "don't mind" will eventually change. Then will you care enough to talk about it? I'm pretty sure the NFL had already decided to revisit this rule in the coming offseason.
Yes, I do lack the conviction to argue about a rule that I don't mind.
quote:Should I have said you should watch people play Plinko instead? They both require as much skill to be rewarded as the endzone fumble turnover touchback rule.
Off to watch people scratch off lotto tickets, solely because you nailed that analogy.

quote:Correct. That's a safety. The defense forces the offense to retreat to its own end zone, hence the two points and free kick. This is football.
Unless we're talking about an offense in their own endzone.
quote:It makes sense, and it's been explained to you. You just don't get it, and your proposed rule changes suck. This is football.
zero sense

It's a game of inches, guy.
Safeties are worse you lose possession, they get 2 points.
The rule that the Ref didn't call against Seattle makes it a bit more fair if they call it right

quote:So your endzone-owner argument holds zero weight.
Correct. That's a safety. The defense forces the offense to retreat to its own end zone, hence the two points and free kick.
quote:If it makes so much sense, then why is there so much debate about it?
It makes sense, and it's been explained to you. You just don't get it
quote:Get out of here with that shite. I'll say it again, football is supposed to be about earning every inch and gaining possession of the ball, NOT being gifted possession and 20 free yards.
This is football.
NFL VP of Officiating agrees with me
You're a fricking joke.

quote:I bet it changes within 3 years.
Nothing wrong with the rule. It's fine, it makes perfect sense, and it won't change
quote:How about handling it like every other forward fumble out of bounds? There's no need to impose an absolutely game-changing penalty for something that essentially boils down to luck.
nobody has any good ideas for rule changes regarding this.
Posted on 10/6/15 at 12:52 pm to SammyTiger
quote:Exactly, so why do you want to transform one inch into 20 yards?
It's a game of inches, guy.
quote:At least the defense earns a safety.
Safeties are worse you lose possession, they get 2 points.
quote:Not really, since the ball probably would have gone out of the endzone anyway.
The rule that the Ref didn't call against Seattle makes it a bit more fair if they call it right

quote:More on this...
The rule that the Ref didn't call against Seattle makes it a bit more fair if they call it right
That missed call is a non-issue if the defense was required to actually gain possession of the ball in order to gain possession. The mere fact that it would even cross a defensive player's mind to knock a fumble out of bounds rather than recover it should be evidence enough that the rule is fricked up.
