Why is it that when you watch the beginning of a American National Football game they show players not crossing thier hearts during the national anthem?

I always thought it was the pledge of allegiance where you were supposed to cross your heart. Not the national anthem. Then I saw that everyone else was doing it, so I started doing it.

ETA: After further reading on the Internet, it does appear that hand-over-heart is expected during the national anthem. The More You Know

You don't have to put your hand over your heart during the national anthem, it is not a pledge.

Just remove your hat and stand (at attention if in uniform)
