Who knows the details of Spurrier almost becoming LSU coach

Since this is probably the last time LSU will play a Spurrier coached team, I was thinking about the story I always heard growing up about how he nearly became LSU coach when Arnsparger left. Anybody know the details?

I know that he wanted to coach at LSU in 2005 but he wasn't a serious candidate for the job I believe.

Story Goes that he was almost our coach... After Arnsparger if I remember correctly... But then he didn't become the coach

We didn't select him and he held a grudge.

Lsu snubbed him, which is why he always made it a point to run up the score on us with his florida teams

He came in for an interview in 1987(?) after Arnsparger left. Spurrier has commented how he thought he was interviewing for the head football position but LSU administration had him meeting with state lawmakers and such. Anyway, LSU admins made the great decision to hire a 33 year old defensive coordinator puppet to take over the reigns because the current players liked him, and the outgoing coach, who was secretly making deals to be Florida's athletic director, said he'd be a good fit.
That outgoing head coach and newly hired athletic director at Florida hired that same Steve Spurrier less than a year later.

If I'm not mistaken the short list at the time was
Mike Shanahan
Steve Spurrier
Mike Archer
Mike Shanahan
Steve Spurrier
Mike Archer

In 2005 he was hired at South Carolina about 3 weeks before the LSU job came open. I don't have any inside information, but I do think that LSU reached out to him, but Spurrier declined because he had just been hired at USCe.

The story goes that during the process, Shanahan and Spurrier were working the room at some alumni event, and compared notes ("They've already settled on Archer and all of this is for show.") And Spurrier was pissed enough for October 9, 1993 ("Never forget") - to happen.

This was my understanding from not being hired when he interviewed while at Duke.

arnsparger recommended Archer.
then immediately after retiring, arnsparger became AD at UF.
a few years later he hired Spurrier at UF.

This is how I recall it went down as well. The key was supposedly, Arnsparger in essence named his successor, Archer, as he was going out the door, to be the AD of UF.
Archer was the DC I believe, and flopped as HC. Arnsparger then hires Spurrier shortly after. People always wondered if Arnsparger purposely screwed LSU as he was walking out the door, knowing he was going to be AD of a rival.
Most believe that it was going to be Spurrier's job, but Arnsparger swung it away from him. Spurrier certainly felt like he was led to believe the job was his, and I believe he has openly stated that he felt spurned.

Didn't LSU take him to Waffle House, or some other low quality restaurant?

I thought he was met at the airport by a GA and told the job had been filled?

Arnsparger was a heck of a damn good HC though. We'd have won the NC had he stayed. Turned us around but then Archer happened.
