Cecil Collins 1997

He got a lot of down votes but I saw CC live. If he wasn't such a head case, he would have been a star. Still, LF is better than CC ever was. CC wasn't that good at making tacklers miss. The only comparison that makes sense is Adrian Peterson. LF is a HOF type talent and he's here another year y'all.

I sat at the 40 yard line in 1997 and watched Collins destroy Auburn. He ran over, through, and around them at will. He weighed around 210lbs but ran much bigger than that. He was every bit as fast as Fournette on the football field but he only played in a few games and broke his leg at Vanderbilt, which was the last game he played in as a Tiger. He was good, but Fournette is bigger, better, and much more level headed on and off the field.

Tip #1 to opposing DB's, I wouldnt say anything that may make that beast angry.

Fournette had a chip on his shoulder after the Auburn quote and was possessed from the word geaux.

He wasnt just looking to score, he was looking at going right at the DB's to give them a taste of the Fournette beatdown.
They quickly began the the "ole" and the meetings on the sidelines with Muschamp losing his mind are not forgotten easily.

What?? No way, dude. Fournette doesn't care about stupid shite like that

Terrible example. This is exactly what bull riders do

I think the differences between the two lie in perspective. I agree that right now LF is better than CC was at LSU. But if you look at the first 4 games LF played in college, and the first 4 (3) games CC played in college, CC was better. That isn't to say that he would have progressed much beyond that....it isn't to say he wouldn't have either. But the "legend" I think lies in the fact that through his first few games of his career he performed basically like no other in the modern age, and it is expected that you would see huge growth throughout his career. Potential, basically. And for anyone who says CC wasn't a man on the field, look up his highlights. And then look up the first four games of last season at LF. We're forgetting that CC rushed for 3100 yards as a senior in HS...with 40 touchdowns. Lol. He was truly an animal.

Note also...LF's first four games was as a true freshman. CC's was as a redshirt freshman. So he should have been a bit more adjusted to the speed of the game.

TL;DR, LF is better now that CC ever was at LSU, and there is no way to know if CC would have gotten even better. Through their first 100 carries, the edge goes to CC.

Fournette is great, but Collins is still the best i've ever seen at LSU.

I can see, having been there, why someone would say this...but not after Saturday.

However,

Collins played 4 games. Ineligible freshman year, so his only measureable stats come from his first 4 games at the NCAA level:

596 yds on 72 attempts (8.3 ypc)and 3 TDs

(vs. UTEP, Miss State, Auburn, Akron*)

* Don't know if these stats include Vandy game when he broke leg, but didn't play long and didn't do much from what I remember- Seriously, he was stuffed EVERY PLAY.

compared to LF7's first 4 games:

200 yds on 38 att (5.2ypc) and 2 TDs
vs. Wisonsin, Sam Houston, ULM, Miss State

My point is, many of us have a skewed memory of Collins, because his dominance was so evident, and so short, and we have lived in the world of could've/ should've without him since. Who and Where LSU was in 1997 has a lot to do with skewing memories, too.

Fournette is the better back in my mind, and I don't think Collins could have kept up with him even if he had not broken his leg and no Psych problems.

But don't hate on Cecil so much. Dude wasn't right, but he would have been one of the best ever, based on what we saw in what little time he had.

Herbstreit's take on Fournette by LACountyTigerquote:Fournette is great, but Collins is still the best i've ever seen at LSU... but the gap is pretty razor thin at this point, and i see Fournette topping Collins, barring injury... Didn't Collins become a legend based on 2 games against AU and Miss St? And that was pretty much it. What were his numbers in those 2 games compared to the last 2 games for LF (again vs State and AU)? Collins sample size was too small to ever be considered one of the greats.

That and Collins was not a very good person to boot.
