His style is not perfect for a total rebuild.
I mean he did do a total rebuild on the team in 2006...

don't act like it wasnt warranted
I'm not but don't act like since the Saints couldn't find a decent coach for 20 years that we have to keep this one.
Again, he was perfect for 2006. That team, at that time, in this city, with THAT QB.
I don't want him near a rebuild. You know why? His ego. It won't be a rebuild to him, it'll be a reload and all you have to do is look at the situation to know that he is NOT that kinda coach. Just isn't. Without Brees, he is not what the franchise needs moving forward.

what coach is good for a rebuild then?
continuity in the NFL has proven to be affective. why fire a winning guy to hire someone else to rebuild. It make zero sense.

no he did not. that's the point. Added pieces but not a total rebuild from the ground up. And got lucky with Miami and Brees.
Im not shitting on the guy at all. Love him for what he did but he is not the guy to start over with. Disagree away cause most will.

I don't think there were a lot of players on the 09 team from the 05.

I think it would be a mistake to let CSP go. I'd like to see all new defensive coaches...especially DL & LB. I don't think Rob Ryan is a bad DC, but I don't think he's a good one either. I haven't really made up my mind on Dennis Allen yet. Jeff Ireland looks like a good hire. I really liked our draft this year...relative to the last few years.
One thing that we need to start doing is targeting young and cheap players in free agency. Ones that have potential that would fit good in our system. That's what the Patriots do...like Amendola & LaFell at WR. I like Spiller, but he makes a lot of money & don't get me started on Jairus Byrd. Solid production at a good price.
I'll be pissed if Bill Johnson is still here next year.

Don't have that answer Lester. I do not recall

continuity in the NFL
that to be a fact. Maybe I'm old and forgetting but name some coaches who bottomed out with a team they had success with, and then did it again in the same place.
I don't think they exist and if they do they are few and far between.
I mean Coughlin won TITLES in NY, they've kept him in a "rebuild" mode and where are they at now? with the Saints in the dumpster.

Yes!
He and our awesome ST coach should do a rebuild on each others garage next year...during the season.

I mean that is as close to a total rebuild as you get in the nfl
And I added this after: He's 25th in all time winning % even after last year and this year so far

I mean their fans wanted him gone before both super bowls to rebuild amd look what happened
They missed the playoffs both years before their 2nd super bowl. He's about 100 years old now

Here is the better question and I don't have the answer.
What NFL coach won a SB with one QB, stayed around, rebuilt after that QB and won again with the same franchise?
The only one close would be Bill Walsh I think and they never rebuilt, just reloaded. Plus he never coached Young as a starter.
I cannot recall one situation like this one turning out well by keeping a coach
Someone remind me and make me look bad

I mean most nfl coaches don't stay around as long as a franchise QB due to age and other factors
It isn't really a territory that is common
And we're still 3 years away from a QB change IMO

I can't think of it either way. It depends on the QB evaluation

Marvin Lewis has rebounded pretty well. Went thru a QB change and a few down seasons, back to winning double digit games.

Coughlin is old and has never enjoyed the regular season success that Payton has. So it's not exactly the same. Getting hot and winning 2 Super Bowls has saved his job.
The underlying signs were there that he was probably just an average to slightly above average coach. His tenure in JAX kinda went the same way.

well that's the point though. Without Brees, you want Payton? And three years is very generous IMO.

Marty went 14-2 in 2006 after Brees left
And then he was fired that season
Stupid chargers

Yes. I think he can help with QB development

His contract is set up for an extension this offseason. It always has beem and it will likely be 2 years. I think it is pretty realistic
And a good example of sucess San diego after Brees left going 14-2

"The question becomes, does he want to move on to something new? He'll find a job pretty easily if so. "
I believe he's ready for a change of scenery. He seems way to detached from this situation to me. He knows he will be scooped up within two years by the team of his choosing. He'll prob do TV for a year and watch the market. Or he could be like Gruden and was a flash in da pan one timer who fell into a great situation (Brees)and flourished. I could see that being the case too...... Either way He Gone

they had a loaded roster AND phillip rivers. Cmon man that is not the situation here.
Lester, Seifert won with Montana and Young as QB's with LOADED rosters both seasons.
No where near the same situation.
