And the City doesn't have it, so who do you think is going to pay it?
the city is getting $45,000,000 from the BP oil spill
The city has the money. Don't be so naive.
The city has plenty of money.
ETA: wizz I'm not calling you naive. I'm talking to to the people who think Nola doesn't have the money.

Better hours? I work the same hours as private...40 per week. Get better opinions.
No one in my office works 40s (except the lowest level people) and we work one weekend a month plus our holidays are not governmental.

As I have stated many times, my late fiance was Captain with the New Orleans Fire Dept. I know that his hourly pay was about $12-$15 an hour. Many FF (firefighters) have 2nds jobs, run their own business on the side, or take extra shifts or private duty jobs to support their families.
He worked 24/7 during Katrina and never got the majority of the pay he should have for that. He slept for weeks on a dirty, wet floor at the firehouse after Katrina.
His "home" firehouse had yet to be repaired years after Katrina and the FF had to triple up and work in the few firehouses that were habitable (and they were barely habitable at that!) Dennis Leary and other charity group rebuilt others because the city just refused to.
For months after Katrina he took extra shifts which were going into the muddy, moldy, houses full of rats, rotten food, dead animals and such, looking for the dead bodies of people who had last been reported as being there.
It was unbearably hot, smelled like hell and he had to wear a hazmat suit which made it even hotter. But he did it with no complaining, just as his crew did.
The men of the NOFD deserve better than the way they have been treated. I wish Mitch would spend some time in general population in prison!!
I'm not getting into this with you because you're good people but spare me the bullshite. There were a shite load of people out there during and after Katrina. NOPD, EMS, doctors, nurses, mental health workers, security, etc, and none of them sent in a fricking billable time sheet for their work during that time. Only NOFD feels the need to remind the public that they were there. But no, throw 40 years of corrupt bullshite all on Landrieu's shoulders.

I pay into a 401K. I do not expect that it will give me FULL PAY when I retire. I will have to cut back here and there.
That's my beef since it's my tax dollars paying them to retire with lucrative pensions.
That's your problem. Begin paying into a 401K early enough and put in enough and you could be getting a raise depending on your salary when you worked. If you are getting paid a ton then you should have other investments and savings. And no one is stopping you from retiring from your career and then getting another job to supplement your savings and 401K.

But now my taxes are going to spike to pay for this bad decision.
You're missing the big picture.
It all starts with your extremely bad decision to live in Orleans Parish, i.e., LittleMoonWorld.

Agreed. Union extortion at it's worst. Firefighters, police, teachers, etc all have absurd pension plans they get by selling their votes to the politician that promises to steal from taxpayers to pay the bill, then they strike
The pension is just one part of it. And, it's not the part that is the subject of Reese's order.
This is about overtime put in since the '70's by firefighters that the city not only refused to pay, but they kept firefighters on the same schedule racking up overtime over all these years.

knew someone who sued the city successfully and was told to stand in line like the rest of the creditors
they have something like 30 million lawsuits they have lost that are unpaid - but theres no collection mechanism for the citizens suing them.
something to remember if deciding to do business with the city.

Sell the French Quarter to the Chinese. Problem solved

In this case, however, the City attorney agreed to an injunction, which they thought would just send it to the unpaid judgment list. They were wrong. If they had just sat silent and shut up until the Judge entered judgment, this story wouldn't be a story.

Oh I agree 100% there were so many others out there doing things that they would never be paid for and they did them because they are good people who wanted to help, not because they expected a paycheck. I only focused on the FF part of it because that was the topic at hand.
My fiance would be the first one to tell you about all of the others who were out there in the trenches (so to speak) with him, exposing themselves to hazardous, filthy and traumatic conditions. He made many new friends from all over the US who came to help and asked for nothing in return.
I lived aboard the cruise ships with the NOPD, EMS, doctors, nurses, mental health workers, security, etc and saw the mental toll it took on them and how they simply repressed their emotions and went out everyday to do it all again. My respect for them is immeasurable.
Aside from the fact that many of them were never paid or even given credit for their contributions, they gave it their all. I often wonder how they are dealing with the after effects (mentally and health-wise) of all that they experienced and were exposed to.
10 years later, I still think of them and wonder how they are doing in their lives today and if they really understand how much their contributions meant to so many.

Sell off city assets to pay for this. We have more than enough city owned real estate that should be put back into commerce that would fetch all of this money plus the City won't have to be responsible for the upkeep on those properties anymore.

Good post
If the city said they'd pay the ff's, I think they owe them regardless of what anyone else did

I have no idea what the answer is, but it seems like new orleans is a clusterfrick as far as government

New Orleans never pays civil judgments. What makes this one different?
