Civil District Judge Kern Reese held New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu in contempt Friday (Sept. 4), but said he would give Landrieu one week to come up with a reasonable plan to pay the city's firefighters before imposing a house arrest sentence.

That was a helluva deal he came to court with.
"We'll pay you the 75 million...over 30 years. Oh, and only if the taxpayers pass a new millage on the ballot next year, otherwise we aren't paying a thing. Also, waive other claims and all of the $100 million in interest we owe."

The Judge or the Mayor?
I think this is actually a good use of the bench by the judge. The judge and the mayor are there to serve the people to their best ability.

It sucks because city pensions are complete bullshite. I don't blame the firefighters because it is their money. But now my taxes are going to spike to pay for this bad decision. Government employees should be on a 401k system like every other person in the private sector. That's an argument for another day.

As a taxpayer and citizen of N.O., I'm none too happy about the city being forced to pay $140 million in one lump sum. frick those firefighters. Unionist pigs at the trough.
Mitch didn't create this mess, he inherited it. He tried to creat a workable solution that doesn't bankrupt the city. Does Judge Reese think he's a Washingtonian who can simply print more dollars?

Agreed. Union extortion at it's worst. Firefighters, police, teachers, etc all have absurd pension plans they get by selling their votes to the politician that promises to steal from taxpayers to pay the bill, then they strike or sue 1st time things get tough.

I was just at the court house. I was wondering why there was so much press there. Guess this is my answer.

so where do you think the money will come from?
virtually every pension fund in the State has a huge UAL. Somebody is going to be paying more taxes to make that up.

We can sit here and say they are greedy or whatever, but the fact is that the city signed an agreement saying they would be paid X and given Y in benefits, and then when it came time to pay, the city paid less than X and less than Y.
Tell you what, on your next paycheck, why doesn't your company only pay you 500 less than your salary, and only pay half of the match you are supposed to get, and then if you say anything to complain, they can just say you are greedy.
Pensions need to go away for the future, but if the city made a promise to pay, it needs to pay.
How that happens, I don't know.

It's an incentive to take these jobs because they have literally the worst jobs in America. you couldn't pay me double what I make to do any of those jobs.

Those groups get paid squat in Louisiana. Firefighters and police have dangerous jobs so I support their "absurd" pension plans 100%.
