The issue is that Washington exit is politically untouchable. Widening needs to happen, but it needs to be there.
when I get stuck in traffic I see blacks, whites, Asians, men, and women right alongside my car.
Every neighborhood in town doesn't need an entrance an off ramp.
Close Washington Street, and the Perkins Road exit ramps and upgrade Dalrymple and Acadian Thwy.
You don't need so many exits/entrances that close together.

So instead of whining and bitching about a huge infrastructure frick-up, let's all be adults and get in the correct lane well before arriving to it since we all are aware of the situation.
The adult thing to do is to let people use all available lanes up to the split and let traffic freely merge in and out.

shutting down the washington st exit, building another lane over it and extending it to accommodate I-10 traffic would relieve a lot of the bridge backup that occurs literally every day of the week.
every day except for mondays the 18 wheelers sit in the middle lane of the bridge headed east bound and travel through the choke point of the merge of I-110 and I-10 near the washington st exit. it's insane.
then you factor in the traffic coming from the plants on LA-1... two lanes from LA-1, then the river road, then the service road... all 4 lanes merging onto the 1 lane onramp to the bridge where 1 other lane is merging from port allen INTO 3 more lanes from 18 wheelers and other traffic heading east bound.

People constantly say this, but it seems like such a cop out.
Who is the constituency to whom this is an "untouchable" idea? It seems completely asinine. Anyone can exit at Nicholson or Dalrymple and travel on the surface streetsto the area of the Washington exit in two minutes or less at any time of day.

Studies have proven that we are past the point of adding more interstate lanes and loops to even help. So why go that route?
No, studies have shown that cities on the scale of Dallas with its infrastructure already in place may be at a point of diminishing returns. Acting like what Dallas' experience is means that we shouldn't add a lane to I-10 to make it two lanes is foolish.

If they built new lanes for 10 East, don't you think they would reconfigure the bridge lanes to have all 3 lanes available for eastbound traffic, instead of 1 for NB 110, 1 for EB 10 and 1 for Washington Street?
I like the idea of the lane stacks. At the very least we could have an HOV lane to the outlying parishes. While they are at it, build light rail on the top. I'm talking a triple decker stack that rivals anything in Dallas or Houston.

it's not politically untouchable. it needs to happen. and it needs to happen now.

Touching it would be racist, and as such you can't do it. You'll never hear someone go on the record saying that, but it's how it is.

someone is just going to have to make the decision to do it and not worry about being called a racist. that exit is a choke point to a major interstate. it holds up commerce every day.

Honestly, I don't see how this would affect more than a few houses in the area. Why not add a new exit coming off of the ramp to take 110 North? It could wrap around and meet up with Thomas Delpit/East Blvd.
Just looking at the map, there is plenty of room to expand 10 with at least 1-2 lanes without encroaching on the neighboring houses (with the Washington exit ramps removed). They already have the interstate in their front yards, what would another lane matter to them. The real problem lies where you get closer to the lakes and the houses off of E Lakeshore. Those are much closer to the interstate and would be cause a huge issue with expansion.

No argument from me, but I'm not the person to make that decision.

Correct. Nothing will ever convince me that this is some constituency's biggest hot button issue that would get someone unelected if they tried or even proposed. It's preposterous.

This x1000. The federal government should fricking condemn it.

What is interesting is watching a vehicle coming South on I-110 and trying to use the Washington St. Exit. They literally try and cut through all that traffic coming East on I-10 to reach that tiny exit ramp. It's chaos right there.

I don't think there is any way Baton Rouge can avoid needing another lane added in that section of I-10 between downtown and College, including new shoulders where possible. There are over 100,000 cars per day on that section and it narrows down to one lane eastbound at the 110 split. It was an inadequate design 30 years ago, and it's a disaster today.
They can do it without disrupting the Perkins Road overpass area if they close down the on/off ramps onto Perkins and have traffic go around to Acadian.
Also, they will need sound walls and some retaining walls....maybe the city can lobby for nice looking ones with vegetation, and landscaping etc.

People pander to stupid issues that wouldn't get them unelected all the time (monuments for example). Why is this surprising?

The issue has never been the engineering. It's always and forever will be the political side and trying to please every person in the world which is mathematically impossible.
I've seen engineering drawings for widing as well as loop plans dated from 1977...let that sink in...1977.

This. Zipper!. Don't force someone off the road. One car is not going to delay you.

Would love to see some of those if digital. It would be great to look back and see how undeveloped everything was when they starting 'planning' that.
