re: Since McNeese is up this week, somebody justify that school's existence for me.

Should be plenty of opportunity for that in LC coming up.

That's like a year old too. Some things have changed. I know Boise in DeRidder is also doing an expansion.

Heard most of that sasol stuff was either canceled or on hold. Know some vendors that were working there that have been shut down for a couple months now
Posted on 8/30/15 at 7:19 pm to yellowfin
Yea, part of it is on hold for now. They won't cancel it completely any time soon and have to go through all the permitting and EPA hurdles again if they decide to go forward.
Even without it, we are looking at something like $40 billion worth of new development. It puts us over $60.

No. Born and raised in Texas. Did graduate from McNeese though. Actually just got back NO today. That place is just terrible. I would live in Lake Charles before NO any day.

What about Southeastern and UL? I say close Nichols and Southeastern. Convert UL and McNeese into junior colleges/trade schools.

Close down the LSU system. Too much drain on the state coffers.

That's just dumb. Trying to have a serious conversation about too many four year colleges in Louisiana, and your idea is to close the flagship institution for the state.

Try not to take yourself too seriously. NO universities will close. Stop wasting your time type your opinion on it.
Oh, its called sarcasm by the way. Oh, and in the real world, when a business is taking loses the way higher education is now, the biggest draining factors are done away with. Now you know...boom..serious enough?

Providing quality education is the responsibility of the state. It is NOT a business.

Closing schools won't solve anything. We need to get rid of programs that have little to no market value before taking down a school

I disagree. One of the reasons HBCU exists is to give people opportunity that they do not have at PWI. It's provides a gateway for people to become professionals unhindered by implied racial barriers. People who have talent and otherwise would be good at something are held back.
But more to the point, closing colleges won't solve our debt problem.

I recognize that there are probably some good things about the school. But it is still a somewhat sad little college. What do they have in Lake Charles that cannot be replicated elsewhere so that we don't have so many 4 year schools sucking at the teat? Are there programs that simply have to be in Lake Charles? Of course not.
I'm not trying to restart the conversation about which schools to close or merge. I want to take them one at a time. Somebody convince me why McNeese is worth the investment at the expense of more vibrant institutions. And if your argument is simply that a city the size of LC needs a 4-year college, you will be immediately disqualified.
(PS -- I lived in LC after law school, so I know a decent amount about the school. So don't bullshite me.)
