Southern sucks

I know dozens of really talented lawyers who graduated from Southern, who make lots of money. Just bc you can't get in to LSU, or can't afford Tulane/Loyola, does not mean you won't be a great lawyer.

I am glad that i didn't have to drive over there for 3 years though.

i mean, they are satisfied with their salary and do not make any effort to have a side practice. you know the stigma against government workers, right? there is a reason for it.

Do LSU and Southern still allow cross registering between the schools? If so, a Southern student can take 2 classes a semester at LSU.

Definitely a way to save some money.

No; there is an obvious reason why Southern is a national leader in landing government jobs.

In general, mediocre candidates seeking security. Obviously not a basis for ambition or efficiency. People who try too hard are typically either shamed into compliance or purged. Clock watching is common.

In law, add some idealism to the mix. This, combined with the above, results in frustration and depression. You either leave for money or you stay in the mix and conform to the inefficient bureaucracy, becoming part of the problem. You learn that the way to climb is not to put out good product or innovate, but to check the right boxes with the right people.

ALL THAT SAID, there are a handful of agencies where that is not really true. DOJ is one. Most others aren't really applicable most likely (CIA, NPS, etc.). My direct experience is a the federal level, but as an attorney I've seen state and local up close and I think this applies to them as well.

I don't know about that. My personal perception is that most people don't plan to invest the 3 years of time and money spent in law school to earn the type of wages that a governmental attorney generally earns.

For most people, governmental positions are safety nets, not destination jobs.

With that said, the non-monetary benefits can be nice.

If you get accepted by both then go to LSU. That's a no brainer

I would like to know how many of the people responding to this thread actually went to law school. I am a 3L at Southern and chose it over several other law schools. I can tell you in terms of education you are going to get out what you put in no matter where you are. I'm not going to tell you Southern is perfect because it's not and has many problems but it is cheap.

Because you are going for free? Honest question. My response has been all other things equal, go to LSU. If you can go to Southern and come out cheaper...do it.

If government isn't a respected field for someone with a law degree then what typically is? My guess is "BigLaw" firms...

Government is, at high levels or DOJ or as an ADA, to a lesser extent. It can still be a good gig for attorneys at bad agencies, but not at lower levels (think DOL or DOD or DHS).

Big law is respected, but the problem you're more likely to encounter is that you have fewer options in the areas you want to practice. NOLA has a small big law community to begin with, and places like LC have nothing of the sort. But, in metro areas, you not only have big law, you have sophisticated medium and small firms. Here in Atlanta we have 5 person law firms that do sophisticated corporate work and complex commercial lit, but a firm of that size in smaller areas is going to be doing PI, insurance, or family law. Just how it goes.

But ignore what you think is respected and pursue what you find fulfilling.

Southern is really perfect for people who have jobs waiting on them and all they have to worry about is passing the bar because it's much cheaper.

Fair enough. And I can tell you that the people posting with legitimate responses are all lawyers. With experience. Not some shite-dick 3Ls.

It really doesn't matter anymore. Just pass the bar. If you want to get a good legal education, go to LSU or Tulane. If you want to be a lawyer, choose any of the 5,000 law schools in Louisiana
