City dwellers, check your toilet before you sit down. It sounds like an urban legend, but rats actually do manage to crawl up from the sewers and into unsuspecting residential toilets. In Portland, Oregon, one pest control company says it gets ten to 15 calls a year for rats in toilets, and it’s easy to speculate that the numbers are higher in cities like New York.

This National Geographic video explains how rats climb into your toilet.

quote:

They can swim for three days and are able to hold their breath underwater for up to three minutes.
They have been swimming to ships as long as humans have been sailing.

They can also crawl the smallest of gaps as their ribs are hinged at the spine.

Their ability to squeeze into the tiniest of spaces means crawling manhole covers and grates pose no problems.

How would leaving the toilet seat down make any difference? Did you mean the lid?

Oh I gotcha. The rat will swim for 3 days, and hold his breath for 3 minutes at a time, to make it all the way up to your toilet, just to see the lid down and say "frick it, I'm turning around". Sounds legit

One time I ate bad Chinese food, that's what the toilet looked like when I got up.

I know someone this happened to. They saw their cat walking through the house with a soaking wet, dead rat in its mouth and followed the trail of water back to a toilet in the basement, from which the cat had apparently removed it.
