We couldn't have a TV in our rooms? Hard comparison because when I was this age you just borrowed your parents cell phone and texting was 10 cents a pop

I was driving to school as a freshman, so my perspective may be a little different.

seems like a little old to be that controlling. I could see it for a younger child, though.

I'm willing to bet school issued computers block porn sites and other things you're worried about.

What are you afraid she is going to do on the computer? Whatever it is, she could be doing it all day while they're out for the summer. You really think it matters whether it's day or night? We set smart limits on our teenager's phone so she couldn't text or call after a certain time. It's not that we didn't trust her, it's that we wanted her to go to sleep at a reasonable time.

It's typically the network that does the blocking, not the device itself.

You can't block it from the device.

Same for me and I didn't go crazy when I got to college. Kids need structure and boundaries. It won't kill her to not have the computer in her room. Saying "all the other kids are doing it" is simply a manipulative thing that teens say to make you feel guilty.

The biggest thing is to have clear communication with why you think it is important. Simply having a rule explained as "my way or the highway" does nothing more than to create resentment.

You also have to be careful that you aren't coming across as not being understanding or approachable. A lot of kids get themselves in serious trouble when they try and be sneaky. They then don't want to call their parents for help, and end up making a worse decision.

She seems a little old for that.

I got phone taken away when I did wrong, but I had a phone at 14 (landline). My parents' bedroom was under mine, so they knew if I was on it too late and they'd take it away if so.

Had computer in my room beginning in high school.

I have my 9 year old believing that I have an app that allows me to watch every keystroke as he types on our PC. That should hold me for about 6 months.

I've given up on hoping he doesn't constantly stumble on inappropriate shite. I've tried a few controls but they are too restrictive.

Exactly. Too many parents take the "I don't care. These are the rules, now STFU" approach.

Not true. Depends on what system they are using.

I always sat my kids down and explained to them why i as a parent made my decision. It was never about my lack of trust for them at that age but my responsibility to protect them.

It just seems that you could get around it somehow if it's not blocked on the network.
