What do you suggest then... Mai's?

Heading GOATs for others can be fun, but also tiresome. Those Brash GOATs are tasty, though.

the Viet places I like don't have good beer selection, so I can't help there.

Not authentic, that is all. If your friend has had authentic Vietnamese they would not be impressed.
Jesus, they serve chicken fried steak, burgers, and chicken tenders...It's a bar that serves Vietnamese food, of course it's not going to be "authentic". The CFS is probably the best thing on their menu.
Pho Binh on White Oak for Viet in the Heights.
Anyways, back to the beer discussion. Specs in Midtown has an aisle just for Texas beers, so that's a good start. Most of the recs in the thread have been pretty good already and you should be able to find them there(except the draft only beers). You already mentioned BP, Deschutes, FW, etc. as non Texas beers that would be good to grab as well.

I wouldn't call myself Vietnamese food expert, have a little more experience with Thai and Indian in Houston, that being said:
Pho Saigon in midtown is my favorite. Pho Binh on White Oak is good too, have only tried their pho so can't comment on anything besides that.

Anyone that has suggested I go there gave their Viet food high recommendations, which should not be the case is all I'm saying.

Thanks I'll def check those places out. I dont remember a "Houston's best viet" thread and wanted an alternative. I used to go to Vietnam on 19th I believe. Or Mai's after the club.

Wife and I are kind of working our way around Chinatown now. Been very impressed with first two places.
I think I'll have another Viet place to add to the list soon - place in Chinatown where they just bring a bunch of stuff out family style and you make your own spring rolls.
After I try that place, some Korean on long point, and another Chinese place or two it might be time to start a Houston Asian food thread - Chinese, Indian, Korean, Thai and Viet top 3's in each class.

Bon Ga in Long Point is the place to go for Korean. Chinatown is incredible, Fu-fu is our go to place there. It would take you years to eat at all the places in Chinatown.

Weird thread. I ask for beer recommendations for someone to pick up for me in Houston and I think I got more Vietnamese restaurant advice than beer recs. but thanks, yall!

Good stuff, but not bottled, yet.
Now that you mention it, you're right. I just realized that I've only had it on tap.
Memory fading . . .

Huynh Cafe is great Vietnamese food. Order some Vietnamese coffee like 15 minutes before you're done and enjoy

Houston people are smart enough to play to their strengths.
