My parents like long road trips as well. My Dad is retiring in 2 weeks and they already have a 2 month long road trip following the east coast up to Maine planned for September and October.
They thought about a 5th wheel, but decided they enjoyed finding little cabins and B&Bs more than the hassle of a 5th wheel.

I don't see this as a hijack. We're discussing things we'll do in retirement. That includes places we'll go and by extension where we'll stay while we're there.

That sounds like fun. And I guess it all depends on how long you plan on stopping along the way. What we're picturing is when we stop somewhere, staying there for at least a long weekend or maybe a week or even two at a time.

You do realize a boat take about as much work and upkeep as a camper, right? As for the other activities, we're planning on doing the same type of things.

yeah, I own a boat and a houseboat...I know exactly what it takes to keep them up. However, I dont plan on owning that boat....I'll just charter it when I want to go fishing or whatnot.

My family has land on the Tallapoosa river. I plan on buying a small place in Ocean Springs, MS. Will spend my time fishing, and going to AU away games. Will watch AU home games outside, drinking an IPA, and looking at the water.

To answer the OP, I think I’m going to die young. I’ve always had that intuition. Not from something like cancer, but from something ridiculous like a lightning strike or errant tee shot on the golf course.
IF I do live to retirement age, I’d like to be done at 65 and I’d downgrade everything I have and move my wife and I into a quiet, remote lake or beach house. We would have a reliable sedan for road trips to see family and a beat up old Wrangler for trips into town to the grocery. I would have several dogs, a closet of scotch and weed, and I’d sit on my dock and fish the entire day not caring whether I caught a damn thing or not.
We plan on traveling while we’re young before kids and have already done so a lot.

We thought about that but have leaned towards the truck/toy hauler for two reasons.
1. We can use the truck as a means to get around while the 5th wheel is set up back at the campground. When it's time to go get groceries or take the grandkids to the movies or something, we can just drive the truck.
2. Having a toy hauler 5th wheel will, in addition to making it easy to haul my bike, will also allow me to have a garage to park it in instead of it being out in the elements all the time.
